Bus service in Darwin
The great thing about the bus service in Darwin is the $2 tickets which last you 3 hours so you can do some sightseeing around the place as well as getting to your destination .
NO 14 takes you to Cullen Bay where you catch the ferry to
No 8 is the one to catch to Shady Glen Caravan Park and if you do that tell the bus driver you want to get off just after the 90 k zone!
A group of us were told off by a grumpy bus driver as we asked him for the stop by Shady glen Caravan Park & had no idea what stop it was ( first time on a bus in Darwin ) I am sure he doesn't like tourists .
Watch the buses and wave down the one you require .
Getting to Darwin
There are flights to Darwin from nearly everywhere so check the website for best deals to Darwin .
If you are not in a hurry or on a budget then checkout Greyhound for their specials online .
Also go into a greyhound office for a card as after 5 greyhound trips you recieve one free like a coffee card !
There is an airport shuttle about $15 a person however if you are staying at Chillies for a few nights they will refund you the $15.
Greyhound coach pulls in near the backpackers so close you can see it from the spa at Chillies !
Backpackers Darwin- Chillies backpackers.
After a few days I realised that to really enjoy Darwin I need to be in town withing walking distance to places + my accommodation so I could swim to keep cool in between exploring Darwin so i booked a couple of nights at Chillies backpackers .
This turned out to be a great move and I had a great time wandering down to the laggon for a swim & checking out other great sites.
Chillies had female only dorms , free breakfast & 2 spas to relax & unwind in + entry into their other hostel for use of the swimming pool + a free dinner when purchasing a drink one evening .
Chillies Backpackers is right by Coles, restaurants , the mall as well as close to the local bus and Greyhound which I was traveling back on to Kununurra.
Shady Glen Caravan Park
Caravan Parks Darwin
I can only comment on Shady Glen Caravan Park as that is the first place I stayed in at Darwin .
From the Greyhound bus depot in town it cost me $25 in a taxi late at night .
On my arrival I then set up my tent and slept !
Shady Glen caravan Park is a pleasant place to stay if you are in your own caravan/camper or a cabin with your own car .
On your own without a car it is very inconvenient even with the bus service up the road .
The pool was nice and staying open till 9 pm was great , however it was hot early and the pool doesn't open till 9am .
The camp kitchen was a huge disappointment as it wasn't equipped like so many other camp kitchens I have seen.
The microwave was out of order & there were no saucepans etc available .
Be aware there are no refunds so only pay a short time in advance .
