Long Island Whitsundays Ferry Day Tours from Airlie Beach Australia

Updated on May 14, 2011

The Whitsundays is a group of tropical islands off the north east coast of Australia. Long Island is one of 74 islands with access by way of a ferry ride from Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach the sometimes vibrant sometimes sleepy but never boring seaside town and known locally as the Gateway to the Whitsundays.

Long Island in the Whitsundays

Leaving from ShuteHarbour gives a great perspective of the islands and the topography of the main land and the ferry ride only lasts 15 minutes. Long Island is nine kilometres in length and boasts three resorts all offering a different style of accommodation.

Long Island Resort caters for families and large groups. Peppers Resort provides accommodation for romantic interludes offering privacy from a balcony overlooking the bay. Tucked away in Paradise Bay Eco Friendly Whitsunday Resort is as the name suggests.

Long Island Resort

As you step off the ferry a porter will greet you and take care of your luggage. It is up to you whether you walk the jetty or ride the cart back to the Long Island Resort. The walk is pleasant and only takes a few minutes. If you are lucky you might spot a turtle or stingray in the water below the jetty.

Paradise Bay Eco Friendly Whitsunday Resort

Accessible by helicopter, Paradise Bay Eco Friendly Whitsunday Resort on the south of Long Island received the Travellers' Choice Award for best hotel in the South Pacific for service in 2010 and 2011.

Island Hop the Whitsundays

For those islands in the Whitsundays that don’t have a ferry boat ride, there are plenty of alternatives. Hire a boat, jet ski or yacht and do your own island hop through the Coral Sea and visit all of the Whitsunday Islands. There is much to explore and never enough hours in the day.

It is awesome Tony. Although we are having some unusual weather at the moment with a lot of rain in what is supposed to be the end of the dry season. Thank you for reading.

Not just idyllic attemptedhumour, this really is paradise, or at least in normal circumstances. La Ninio has upset the apple cart this year.

Guess what? I live here, permanently. Can't believe it myself, still pinching myself. I know, sometimes I may sound like the paid tour guide, but gee, it's not hard to go wow, this is an unreal place to come for a holiday, stay for a while, or hey, why not live here forever? It's unbelievable.

Hi karanda, Mareba is the furthest north i have been. I used to live in Brisbane and the Gold Coast in my earlier days. It sounds an idilic place to visit. Are you on a permanent holiday, or a paid tour guide? Cheers

Oh, thank you Prasetio my friend. I do hope you stop by once I have finished the article and posted some more tempting photos. Australia is an amazing place, and these Whitsunday Islands are only the beginning.

I had the urge to pack!

      A tropical island seems so

      inviting, here, where the

      heater has been turned on..

Eiddwen you are much too kind. I had a lot more to add about the Long Island experience, we spent the day there exploring and taking in the wildlife, but I hit the publish button way too soon.

I promise I will go back and complete the article and give you lots more juicy photos so one day you will have to come and visit.

      Hi Karanda,

I love to read and look at photos of different places from anywhere and everywhere across the world.

A good combination of both here.

Thank you so much for sharing.

      Take care.
