Arenal Costa Rica Hot Spring Resorts

Updated on June 5, 2013

Good for the mind, body and soul.

Due to their popularity, there are now quite a few hot spring resorts to choose from when visiting the Arenal region of Costa Rica.

These resorts all sit at the base of the majestic Volcano Arenal offering not only great service and comfortable accommodations but the chance to enjoy the healing mineral rich thermal waters of the Arenal Volcano, a unique benefit that only nature can provide.

The Arenal region of Costa Rica is a popular area due to not only the allure of the Arenal Voclano but also because of it's central location to most of the most popular adventures that Costa Rica has to offer.

Baldi Hot Springs Hotel and Spa, Arenal

If you are interested in visiting Baldi Hot Springs Hotel and Spa there are two options.

The first is to book a day pass to the resort which will include use of the thermal pools, waterslides and lunch. Day tours to the resort can be purchased at many of the tour operators located in the nearby town of La Fortuna. I have been told that booking through a tour company is actually less expensive then booking directly through the resort.

The other option is to book a stay in their onsite resort. The grounds to Baldi are quite large, offering over 25 different natural pools however, it only offers 32 rooms for guests to stay in.

I recently had a chance to stay at Baldi. I had heard that the resort can become crowded during the day when the tour operators bus in visitors with a day pass. However, my visit was during green season (May to October) and the resort was definitely not crowded.

When first entering the resort you will find the friendly staff waiting to check you in. Check in process was a breeze and within a few minutes we were on our way to our room.

The room was spacious and elegantly decorated with a king size bed, flat screen television, air conditioning, wi-fi, coffee maker, mini bar. The bathroom had marble countertops and a full sized shower and bathtub. Our room had a balcony which sat our among tropical trees and plants which was a wonderful place to enjoy our coffee at the beginning of each day.

The resort has one open air restaurant on the property. We enjoyed a wonderful typical Costa Rican breakfast there each morning. Fresh tropical fruit, coffee, juice, pastries as well as pinto gallo, eggs and sweet plantains. The restaurant was never busy and the friendly, bi-lingual staff were very attentive to all of our needs.

The grounds are lush with big beautiful trees and vibrant plants full of hummingbirds and butterflies. The 25 different pools are all created with dramatic effects such as rock formations and waterfalls. all which create a very relaxing environment.

There are two large pool bars - one at the front of the resort and the other in the center, which offers a swim up option and televisions.

You will find different temperature pools throughout the resort. Most of them are the thermal pools in varying different temperatures. We were able to find a few cold water pools for times during the day when we were looking to cool off with a refreshing swim. Make sure you don't miss a ride down the three waterslides which are located at the very back of the property.

One of my favorite areas of the resort was one of the pools that had caves surrounding it which when explored, led to an all natural volcanic powered sauna. If you are looking for more all natural therapies, a visit to the the Baldi Aqua-Spa offers a variety of treatments such as volcanic mud wraps, massages and exfoliations.

The resort can also help you set up over 16 different adventure tours to further explore the beautiful Arenal region during your stay. It also offers an onsite gift shop.

Baldi Hot Springs Hotel and Spa in the Arenal region of Costa Rica is a great resort for any type of traveler. It would be perfect for families or couples looking for romance and it's a great way to spend the day when visiting nearby La Fortuna.

Hotel Los Lagos, Arenal

Hotel Los Lagos hot spring resort offers the largest property of the resorts in the Arenal area. Not only does it sit at the base of the volcano, it offers an included volcano observatory (a short drive up the road that leads through the property or a hearty 2.8 km uphill hike) which is one of the best viewing points for the Arenal volcano in the area.

Los Lagos offers a day pass option as well as on site lodging. You will find the lodging area for the resort by driving up the winding road that goes through the property. The rooms are spacious and comfortable - offering TV, air conditioning, mini-bar and bathroom with full sized shower and bathtubs. (Not to mention great views of the volcano.)

The most unique thing about Los Lagos is it's wildlife. The resort is a great place to bring kids and you can easily spend half a day walking through beautiful tropical gardens that lead to a colorful dart frog farm, butterfly farm and crocodiles. Take the bridge that brings you to the pool area to see the colorful Koi pond.

The resort has a large cold water pool with two different water slides. The other large pool is one with thermal waters, it also has a slide and a large swim up bar along with other little sitting areas that are perfect for soaking and enjoying a cocktail or two. Behind the two large pools are a variety of smaller little thermal pool areas where you can get away from sometimes busier larger pools.

There are two different restaurant options on site, Las Palmas which offers rainforest views and a wide variety of typical Costa Rican food as well as other international delights. It also offers Nahula Restaurant, which is a more intimate dining experience. Make sure you pay a visit to Lemnos Wet Bar which offers over 56 cocktails as well as natural tropical fruit beverages, soda beer and wine.

Los Lagos has it's very own onsite zip line. As you hang out at the pools, you can see people zip lining above you through canopy having the time of their lives. Los Lagos will also help you set up many of the other tours in the area, such as hiking or horseback riding.

Their Fangus spa offers services such as body wraps, manicures, reflexology and hot stone massages. They also have a small gift shop onsite.

Los Lagos is a fun resort for kids of all ages. I've visited many times with my children and it's a place I recommend to anyone visiting Costa Rica.
