My Trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon

Updated on January 3, 2012

Long Sandy Beach with Beautiful Haystack Rock

My husband and I took a Spring trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon. We spent a couple of nights at Tolovana Inn, which is right on the beach, just south of Haystack Rock. As soon as we got there, we ate fish and chips at Mo's Restaurant and walked along the beach to Haystack Rock. It was dreamy and so wonderful! It was before the tourist season and still a bit cold and rainy, but that just made it extra special.

I can't wait to go back and visit again! The only thing I regret is that I forgot to bring my hat! I'd love to go again when the tide is lower so I could see the sea creatures in the tide pools. I wouldn't mind going during the stormy season either! I love watching storms!

The beach is big and sandy, with rock monoliths in both directions.

This picture was taken on our first day. That's Tolovana Inn. It's right on the beach. We walked the nearly 2 miles down to Haystack Rock.

Our stay at Tolovana Inn was fine. We got a bargain price and a small room, but it was quiet and close to the beach. The staff were friendly and we didn't have any problems.

Can you guess......? - answer is at bottom of this page

What do you think they call the Boulders next to Haystock Rock?

We had to pay a small entry fee to visit Ecola State Park, and then drive up a steep and windy road. Finally we got to a parking lot near this great overlook area. The view was amazing! Here's a picture of just one part of it.

Quiz Answer is

The Needles

I'm not sure if this is the origin of the names for these monoliths, but it always makes me ask:

"Can you find the Needle in the Haystack?"

Please comment in my guestbook. - I'd love to hear from you!

My wife & I stayed at a little B&B right on the beach during a wicked winter storm a few years ago - so fierce the surf was coming right into the B&B's parking lot. We did get some fabulous photo's of the surf crashing into the rocks though

We've been there many times since we live in the Pacific Northwest, and there's always something beautiful to see or watch or photograph, even in the fiercest storm season. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I live near Portland, OR, and Cannon Beach is one of my favorite places! I actually stayed at Tolovana Inn about a year ago. Haystack Rock is especially cool to explore at low tide. And Mo's is such a staple on the Oregon Coast, good choice! :)

Well, I wonder who is following who? My husband and I usually spend early springtime at Cannon Beach. This year we went to Bandon, Oregon. There we got to see the seals and their pups. The coast is lovely and this is truly a lovely lens.
