Places to visit along the Denpasar to Ubud road

From the moment you disembark the plane at Denpasar Airport to the time you arrive at your hotel in Ubud, you will be spoilt for choice in the number of places you can visit in Bali. Below are some of the best locations to visit on your journey from Denpasar to Ubud.

1. Visesa Resort, Ubud

Located at a distance of about 40 minutes from Denpasar, this 50 unit resort is a set in an authentic natural environment with sprawling gardens and magnificent lagoons. The resort is set on a 4ha piece of land overlooking the dense tropical forest and is a good place to unwind after the long trip from the airport.

You can relax as you enjoy the cool tropical breeze or take a walk along the sculpture rice paddies. It is a highly recommended location if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Ubud traffic

2. Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni Ubud)

Located within the heart of Bali’s tourism centre, this market sells traditional art and is a favourite place for souvenir hunters. It is not far off the main road from Denpasar to Ubud and you can take a detour from the Bali traffic that can get out of hand some times.

The market has two distinct sections: the art market on the east side and the traditional food market in the west. The art market sell traditional Balinese artefacts and souvenirs and is open between 8am and 6pm daily. The food market can open as early as 4am and close as late as midnight on a busy day.

As with many tourist locations, the prices offered for the art are usually exaggerated and you will have to haggle seriously if you want a bargain.

3. Ubud Monkey Forest

This small 10ha tropical rain forest serves as a conservation and religious sanctuary. You can see a number of monkey species of which the Macaque is the most populous. This Balinese Hindu temple site is located a walking distance from the centre of town just off the Denpasar to Ubud road and attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year.

4. Bali Museum

Located in the heart of Denpasar, Bali, this museum showcases Balinese art and history. It also collects archaeological artefacts that tell the history of Bali. The museum also holds contemporary art exhibitions and is a good place to spend the day before you start your trip from Denpasar to Ubud.

5. Bali Orchid Garden

Though slightly off-road, the Bali Orchid Garden can be accessed from the Ngurah Rai Bypass road. The garden offers tours to individuals and tourist groups who will be taken round by experienced guides. The garden has a wide range of spectacular orchids that are in bloom throughout the year. A small souvenir shop within the gardens offers tourists a memento of their trip to Bali.

Directions from Denpasar to Ubud

There several ways in which you can get from Denpasar to Ubud, but the best is to use a self- driven vehicle. This will give you the required freedom to make the many detours on your journey.

The 38km trip takes approximately 65 minutes - - if there is no major traffic on the road, especially near the Denpasar airport and on entering Ubud. Starting from the airport, the journey can be summarized as follows:

  • From Ngurah Rai International Airport, head 3.4km west until you reach the first left turn
  • Drive 210m, the take the first right turn for another 190m
  • Drive a further 1 km until you reach the turn heading towards Bali Mandara and head through the first roundabout
  • Join the Bali Mandara road for about 2km where you will encounter your first toll of the journey
  • Keep left at the fork and merge onto Mandara Toll Road
  • Keep left at the fork and merge onto Jalan Pelabuhan which is a partial toll road
  • Turn right onto Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai and maintain the bearing for another 3km then turn right onto Jalan WR Supratman
  • Continue onto Jalan Raya Batu Bulan and Jalan Raya Singapadu, then turn right and drive for another 8km
  • Join the Jalan Raya Pengosekan Ubud and continue onto Jalan Wenara Wana then turn right onto jalan Raya Ubud
