Goin to Memphis in a Red Convertible
Suns out and Top Is Down
What do you do when it's summer, you have a red convertible and not very much money? ROAD TRIP! My sister and my nephew and myself took a ride down to Memphis. We had the top down all the way-not good for the kid in the back because it did a number on his hair. The right side of his head had it plastered forward and the left side of the hair on his head was plastered back. Looked like a tornado got him. We had the music blasting and the car was filled with every kind of junk food imaginable.
I am over fifty and never had the opportunity to travel very much. I always wanted to see each of the fifty states. I always thought some of the states might be a little boring, but when you look up the local attractions you wil be surprised at what you will find. There is something for everybody at every price range.
Our first day in Memphis we found our hotel which we found online and a steal. It turned out to be Double tree by Hilton. I have absolutely no complaints about it. They have a stainless steel swimming pool on the rooftop. There is nothing more relaxing at the end of a long touristy day than to go cool off in the swimming pool.
Beale St was full of music motorcycles people and the smell of barbecue. We decided on BB King's Place. How can you go wrong? The best food on the whole trip was served up at his place. The tables in the restaurants are painted with musicians pictures and tell their stories. We were fortunate enough to see a band that pulled a kid up on stage and the prodigy played some blues that we won't forget for a while. Be aware at all times of your surroundings on Beale St, because there are a lot of tourists and criminals always love tourists. There is also drinking allowed outside and there are walk up windows that will serve you food and liquor.
There was a walking ghost tour that was fantastic and our tour guide took us to several spooky places and then there was a trolley ride back to Beale St. One of the tour stops was the Civil Rights Museum. We made a trip there the next day.
The civil rights museum will definitely give you a lot to think about and teach you some pretty amazing things. The last exhibit is the hotel room where Martin Luther King was shot.
Schwab's drugstore is on Beale St and it's known for selling everything. They have everything from Elvis Presley memorabilia to things you find at swap meets. Be sure to check out the upstairs for some more surprises. The store should be a museum.
On our way out we stopped by the Peabody Hotel and walked around the gorgeous lobby and watched the fun as they let the ducks out of the elevator and they waddled over to the fountain and hopped in for a swim.
You can't go to Memphis without a trip to see Graceland. You really need a whole day to visit. There's so much there to see and learn. I won't tell you about that part of it. You'll need to see for yourself. We didn't make it to the Rock and Roll museum but that's another trip.
Next year we're going to the other side of Tennessee. There are waterfalls, zip line tours through the mountains and whitewater rafting and a castle built over a waterfall. I am charmed by Tennessee, I'm going back, and next trip I'm staying a little bit longer.
