A Fall Tour of Missouri Wine Country

I really enjoy seeing the beautiful fall colors in Missouri.

I have spent many years traveling to various parts of the country to enjoy their fall foliage, but I will have to tell you that this year I have seen some of the most beautiful colors right in my home state.

We live about ten miles from the start of Missouri wine country, so on a beautiful October afternoon my husband and I got in the car and headed down the road to photograph the fall colors. There were so many beautiful scenes that I was able to capture many wonderful shots.

We took some time to stop by the Katy trail for some photographs and then proceeded to the various wineries to take advantage of their spectacular hilltop views!

So, sit back and relax and enjoy the beauty that is Missouri Wine Country!

Sugar Creek Winery View - view overlooking river valley

As you travel west on Hwy 94 one of the first wineries you will come to is Sugar Creek Winery. It is set up on the top of a hill and has beautiful views of the hills and valleys along the Missouri river.

You can find more information here on Sugar Creek Winery

View from Sugar Creek Winery

Sugar Creek winery is one of our favorite wineries to visit. They have lots of casual seating along the hillside and often bring in bands to entertain during summer and early fall weekends. It is a great way to sit among friends and enjoy their tasty wine along with some cheese and crackers.

Gold, Orange and Yellow colors line the Road

Traveling through the wine country is a colorful sight in the fall. Beautiful hues of yellow, gold and orange line the roadsides.

Katy Trail State Park - a great place for a hike or bike ride

The Katy Trail state park is a wonderful recreation path for bicycling and hiking. it was built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, which was called the Katy Railroad. When this railroad quit operations in the 1980's the opportunity open up to use the corridor for a recreation area that runs nearly 200 miles across the state of Missouri.

I have been on several sections of the Katy trail over the years and it is wonderful! These photos show a small portion of the trail that runs near the Missouri river and also wind through Missouri wine country.

Looking down the Katy Trail

This photo was taken on a weekday. On a beautiful fall weekend it would be hard to take a photo without hikers and bicyclists in the photo. Walking and biking along the trail is a popular pass time.

More Information on the Katy Trail

If you are interested in learning more about the Katy Trail in Missouri this is just the book for you. Whether you want to bike or hike the trail this book gives you all the information you will need to get started.

Brilliant Red Tree

This bright red tree was standing alone alongside the tree. I thought it was a striking color.

Other trees are shades of orange and gold.

Missouri Wine Country - Defiance, Missouri

Located just 45 minutes from downtown St. Louis you can find a number of wonderful Missouri wineries. Follow Hwy 94 as it winds south and west of St. Louis and you will be entering Missouri wine country. This is just one of the sections where you will find wineries in Missouri. Many of the wineries are set in the hills overlooking the Missouri river!

Fall is definitely my favorite time of the year. I love the beautiful colors and the cool crisp days!

What is your favorite season of the year? - I'd love to hear from you

Missouri is beautiful; I've been there a few times as I went to college in Arkansas and sometimes take additional classes in McPherson, KS. I have never visited wineries there, though. The images in this lens are gorgeous!

I'm afraid spring is my favorite season, but you've shown us why fall is yours. I'm also a great fan of wine country, since I live in the middle of our California Central Coast Wine country. I think the wineries are really lovely to visit, and each has its own character. That's why I write so many lenses about our own wine country. I found it interesting that you didn't show us many actual vineyard shots. The vineyards are the main subjects of my wine country photography -- especially since there's one across my back fence and one right across the highway from me. I can photograph all of them without leaving my yard. I pass at least ten vineyard/tasting rooms on my way to town each day. I love it. But you've got us beat on fall color.

Missouri wineries put out some great wine....I think before prohibition Missouri was #1 or #2 in winemaking in the US, so there is some history there. I buy grapes from the same supplier to Sugar Creek. Best grapes I have ever seen! Blumenhof in Dutzow is also one of my favorites. I should have bought more when I was there...

Gorgeous images ... I love the red tree. It looks too red to be a liquid amber maple. I've only experienced one east coast fall color change, and I remember it looking a lot like your photos. Fall is my favorite time of year.

Spring and Fall are my two favorite seasons. Spring because everything is so fresh and new and Fall because of the spectacular beauty as the leaves turn. I've always thought Missouri was a pretty state and you've captured the Missouri fall so well. Also, I'm a wine lover but have never had wine from MIssouri...you can bet I'll give it a try, now! Beautiful lens. 5* and faved. Will also lensroll to some of my travel lenses.

Beautiful lens, outstanding work! I didn't know Missouri had a wine growing region. We have a few wineries in Massachusetts along the coast, but the wine is very sweet. Nice work, Squid Angel blessed!

Wow, fantastic photos. A long time ago I went to Uni in Columbia, MO. I used to fly to St. Louis and drive over. I can't remember ever seeing scenery like this, nor do I remember that there was wineries in Missouri. It always seems to be a lot more interesting through your eyes than from my memory.

Oh me! You know how much I admire your beautiful photography and it is for sure that this lens showcases some of the most gorgeous. Our leaves have not peaked yet but have in the close by mountains so hope to take a drive up there this weekend. I do love the fall of year and lensrolling this to my Fall Trees lens and giving you a well deserved blessing. Maybe one day I will get to the Missouri Wine Country but until then I will enjoy it through your wonderful photography and lens.
