The Top 10 Places to Pee Before You Die

Updated on September 2, 2012

Where to "Go" Before You Go

Before you go for good, you just gotta go here! Check out these (mostly) not-to-be-missed bathrooms from around the world. Let me know if you visit at loo or throne room that should be mentioned here. We're looking for stunning, unusual or just plain not-to-be-missed water closets.

Number 10

Best Bathroom to Evoke Homesickness (aka the Best Argument for Constipation)

Central West Antarctica

Antarctica

These outhouses look grim, but they are somewhat warm and there is no wind inside! The good news-they smell better than most outhouses.

Antarctic Outhouse (OK, skip it if you must!)

Number 9

I hope you know where this is going...

Grand Central Station

New York, NY

The recent renovation in Grand Central Terminal in New York reflects the architect's philosophy of designing restrooms that not only befit the grandeur of one our most prized national landmarks, but also a belief in an exceptional design aesthetic with the use of high quality materials: Bottocino marble walls, terrazzo seamless flooring, stainless steel doors, Stony Creek granite partitions and high quality sustainable light fixtures.

Number 8

Best Bathroom for Extroverts Bar 89, New York

These designer bathrooms amaze even jaded New Yorkers. The glass doors on the unisex cubicles offer as much privacy as a float at the Macy’s parade. But hook the latch, and the glass becomes opaque. What’s the secret? The door lock turns on a light that shines at an angle and the special glass frosts over. Best of all, these bathrooms are immaculate.

Number 7

The Most High and Mighty Bathroom by Grace of the (future) King of England

Victorian Toilets

Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland, UK

Commissioned in 1899 at the peak of Rothesay's Victorian popularity and since fully restored, these public loos have won nation-wide awards. The gents are a (fully functional) monument to Victorian ornate design incorporating mosaic floors, marble fittings, shiny copper pipework, enameled alcoves, and glass-sided cisterns. Prince Charles , the Duke of Rothesay, has visited this loo in an "official" capacity

Number 6

Best Bathroom to Embrace Materialism or to Renounce It, once and for all!

3-D Gold Store, Hong Kong

The toilet bowls, wash basins, toilet brushes, toilet paper holders, mirror frames, wall-mounted chandeliers and even wall tiles and doors are all made of solid gold. Embedded in the floor at the entrance are gold bars and studding the ceiling are 6,200 diamonds, rubies, sapphires and pearls. The store’s owner was inspired by Vladimir Lenin’s vision of gold toilets for the masses.

Number 5

Number 5 is alive...

Named after Andrew Jackson's Hermitage estate this nearly 100-year old luxury hotel includes public art deco-themed restrooms with authentic terrazzo floors, leaded-glass tiles and a shoeshine station.

Number 4

Cherry Nightclub - Las Vegas

Can it get much more fun than this?

The men's bathrooms at Rande Gerber's Cherry Nightclub inside the Red Rock Casino are graced with custom cherry-red lip-shaped urinals from designer Meile van Schijndel of Bathroom Mania in the Netherlands. There are also two-way mirrors over the sinks in the adjoining men's and women's restrooms.

Number 3

That's number 1 and number 2!

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center

Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA

If Miss Universe was a restroom competition, six finalists would reside in Sheboyan, WI. Kohler sponsored six artists to design sculpture and art using technology and materials from Kohler. Transcending function, these bathrooms are spectacular.

Number 2

The best air freshener is nature!

Best Bathroom for a Safari Adventure

Singapore Zoological Gardens

80 Mandai Lake Road

Singapore

For those who love the great outdoors but hate using leaves for TP, this bathroom is for you. The bathrooms are outside with exotic flowers and foliage. Instead of a mirror in the ladies' restroom, you get a forest! And don't worry, the wildlife on display doesn't include germs--this bathroom has won the prize for Singapore Cleanest Bathroom many years in a row.

Singapore Zoological Gardens

And Number one

The Shoji Tabuchi Theatre, Branson, Missouri, USA

Branson, Missouri, features a bathroom Valhalla, otherwise known as the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre. No high tech gizmos, no sleek Feng Sui, only good old-fashioned hedonism. The women’s room has a fountain, wainscoting, stained glass appointments and an Empire tin ceiling. Live orchids lay nestled at every granite and onyx pedestal sink. The fixtures are carved from black Italian marble and gold. Voluminous chandeliers soar overhead. The air is fragrant with 80,000 fresh violets (used per month). But in this glut of material luxury, simple needs are remembered--a rocking chair is placed at the changing nook.

The gents facility is equally gorgeous yet manly with black lion head sinks, black leather chairs and a marble fireplace. The burled walnut mirror was built in 1868. Men can bond over the hand-carved mahogany billiard table.

Well, that's an unusual subject! a belated congratulations on LOTD. I have had my experiences in different parts of the world with toilets, seems to always come up in a travel conversation...can't say this would be on my bucket-list, but perhaps the places they are at could be...

A fun and nicely done lens:

Although the toilet is often a source of much humor and ridicule, and not many people like to talk about it or even refer to it, a toilet is perhaps one fixture around your home that you absolutely cannot do without.http://www.lockersnmore.com/toilet-partitions-stai...

Wow. There have been only a few times where I was amazed enough to get a picture of a "loo". One was at the New Tokyo Narita International Airport -- I did a Squidoo lens on what to do during a layover at this huge airport...but I didn't have the nerve to put the picture of a Japanese-Style "loo" on the lens. Now that you've presented this, I may have to go back and add the pic (and then link back to you for more "loo" reference!). Other than your Antarctic facilities, most of your facilities are quite elegant. Most of my pics of "facilities" are of the more humble (like Antarctic) fixtures. Thanks for an enlightening lens!
