Enjoy In Rich History
Zadar is a city in Northern Dalmatia. Along with Split and Dubrovnik it is one of the most popular travel destinations in Croatia. Both the historical center and the surrounding islands are definitely places to visit.
While walking through the streets of the old town, located on the peninsula and surrounded by ancient walls, visitors can explore the atmosphere of antiquity, especially the Roman times when Zadar gained its urban structure. The remains of the Roman Forum, one of the best preserved forums in existence, confirm the long and intriguing history of this Adriatic town.
Among the important historical monuments Romanesque churches hold a special place. One of the most recognizable symbols of Zadar and one of the best preserved pre-Romanesque buildings is St Donat's church from the 9th century. If you're into classical music the international summer music festival takes place in St Donat church since 1960.
If you prefer visiting cafes and strolling along a promenade then Zadar's Riva is the right place for you. The sounds of the sea organs of Zadar (Morske orgulje) create an enchanting atmosphere. Make sure to see the Greeting to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu), a light installation embedded in the sidewalk near the organs.
Some of the beaches in Zadar are: Kolovare (a rocky and pebble beach very close to the center), Borik (part of a hotel complex) and Vitrenjak, situated next to Zadar's sailing club. If you want to swim in Zadarska Riva the most exciting time to do it is during the traditional Millennium Jump in July.
There are many places in Zadar to enjoy nightlife. Maraschino café transforms into a club with a large outdoor area during the summer months. The bar is named after a bittersweet liqueur with the flavor of Marasca cherries, which are grown around Zadar. You can visit bars and restaurants in the converted 17th century Venetian naval warehouse called the Arsenal. And there is also the fashionable Garden, located on the top of city walls, overlooking the port of Zadar.
Among the nearby Northern Dalmatia islands you should definitely take a boat trip to the Kornati National Park or visit the surrounding places near Zadar with beautiful sand beaches, such as Punta Skala, Zaton and Nin.For more information about sailing routs near Zadar go to: www.sailingeurope.com .
