Winter Snow Storm Super Poll
Did your local Snowstorm unfold as predicted?
February 1: My husband was plowing snow as a secondary job just south of Rochester, New York, and I was watching the beginning of the storm safely from the house, preparing to catch the phone calls for the people who want to get out of their driveway, even though no one should travel unnecessarily.
By 10 pm February 3rd, the last of this storm has ended and the Storm warning expired, but are we expecting another? Will the next storm predicted for this year top the 36" that we received in 1993 here in the northeast? Will an ice storm like the ones in 1991 and 2003 occur again? We'll see if and when it gets here. I hope not. Those storms knocked out power and phone lines. just like many states in the U.S. have just experienced, and continued for 2 days to 4 days, which kept people in their homes.
Oh, except those who wanted their driveways cleared.

The Snowstorm was not severe as predicted in Rochester...
and the surrounding areas
Rochester was slated to receive nearly 30 inches within a 3 day period. As usual people in the Greater Rochester area prepared for the worst because we haven't had a snow and ice storm since 2003. It didn't happen this time.
Surprisingly Rochester and Buffalo, known for lake effect snow (see below for definition), escaped the brunt of the storm.
We did get some sleet and just a little freezing rain, but it didn't last long and was less than 1/10 of an inch. The snow storm total for Rochester reached 7.5 inches according to the NOAA's National Weather Service. I wasn't able to find the snowfall totals for Henrietta, but snow averaged over a foot deep in my yard.
Although there were areas without power for a short time, we haven't had a wide spread and sustained power outage since 2003. As we've learned our lessons from several winter storms in the last 20 years, many families in the greater Rochester have backup generators and alternate heating because..
there's always next time.
