Winter Snow Storm Super Poll

Updated on February 15, 2015

Did your local Snowstorm unfold as predicted?

February 1: My husband was plowing snow as a secondary job just south of Rochester, New York, and I was watching the beginning of the storm safely from the house, preparing to catch the phone calls for the people who want to get out of their driveway, even though no one should travel unnecessarily.

By 10 pm February 3rd, the last of this storm has ended and the Storm warning expired, but are we expecting another? Will the next storm predicted for this year top the 36" that we received in 1993 here in the northeast? Will an ice storm like the ones in 1991 and 2003 occur again? We'll see if and when it gets here. I hope not. Those storms knocked out power and phone lines. just like many states in the U.S. have just experienced, and continued for 2 days to 4 days, which kept people in their homes.

Oh, except those who wanted their driveways cleared.

How did you fare through this storm?

Take the polls and tell us about this storm,
or the most recent severe winter weather, in your area.

Any other questions you would like to see in this poll?

Let me know, and I'll add them with credit back to you.

The Snowstorm was not severe as predicted in Rochester...

and the surrounding areas

Rochester was slated to receive nearly 30 inches within a 3 day period. As usual people in the Greater Rochester area prepared for the worst because we haven't had a snow and ice storm since 2003. It didn't happen this time.

Surprisingly Rochester and Buffalo, known for lake effect snow (see below for definition), escaped the brunt of the storm.

We did get some sleet and just a little freezing rain, but it didn't last long and was less than 1/10 of an inch. The snow storm total for Rochester reached 7.5 inches according to the NOAA's National Weather Service. I wasn't able to find the snowfall totals for Henrietta, but snow averaged over a foot deep in my yard.

Although there were areas without power for a short time, we haven't had a wide spread and sustained power outage since 2003. As we've learned our lessons from several winter storms in the last 20 years, many families in the greater Rochester have backup generators and alternate heating because..

there's always next time.

Here in Yorkshire we are snow free so far (fingers crossed)

      • kimbesa 6 years ago from USA

A bit less. Storm veered a bit further north at the last minute.

In St. Louis it was much less than predicated...but bad enough :)

      • rlivermore 6 years ago

In Denver it wasn't snow as much as icy roads and temps around 17 below zero. The severe cold and icy roads is why the schools shut down. We've having snow today and probably tomorrow, but it feels much more pleasant than when it was so cold.

      • SnoopyGirl1 6 years ago

It was a tiny bit less than predicted but at 17 inches we still got a huge dose. There were loads of drifts and we built an awesome igloo in between digging out our cars and driveway. The whole thing inspired me to write a lens about snowstorm safety.

      • LissaKlar LM 6 years ago

They were actually pretty on the money. The layers of ice are just so awful along with the bitter cold high winds we got.

We rarely get snow here, and can go years without any, but last winter we had four snow days.

Loved the last comment you made. I get the feeling you are . . . sick of snow! That's the thing with the stuff everyone gets excited at the prospect of it arriving then wants it gone when it gets there! I work from home and have a lovely log fire and a 4 x 4 so it never really effects me. WOO HOOO! Lovely piccies too by the way. With thanks and appreciation. Cathi x

Some of the storms were worse, some were not as bad as expected. All in all, it was still the worst January I can remember in a really long time. Squid Angel blessed!

Beautiful photos and fun polls. We had more ice than snow this week, but there is still lots of snow on the ground from last week's storm.

Great lens! I am lensrolling to my lens Snowstorm 101: How to safely dig out from a blizzard. I love all your photos and video clips. We got snow lightning, but I didn't see it. I must have been asleep already. LOL! My husband told me he did though. I had never heard of snow lightning before.
