Sri Lanka offers many kinds of paths to ride through while you take part in any of the available motorbike tours. It can be a mountain trail; you can cross small streams, ride through muddy roads, gravel roads, sand filled lanes and well maintained asphalt roads where you can cruise with ease.
The best thing about Sri Lanka, it is nearly smoke free country as all the vehicles must pass the green emission test every year. Start your hired bike and check for smoke, sure it won’t provide any visible exhaust; otherwise police may catch you for violation. Likewise smoking in the public places is prohibited. So you can have a clean environment while you are staying here.
If you are going to run between towns that are connected with good roads, no problem speed up with your group leader and the team. The Government requests you to ride at 40 Km/Hour in the town limits and 45 Km/Hr in the village sector highways. Some places you may have many Zigzag roads with smaller bends, hairpin bends and larger bends. When you are going on up country tour route you may come across many hairpin curves. Don’t worry there are good road signs posted by the RDA with recommended action. So keep up speed with the team leader. Don’t try to over take him, just follow him throughout the route.
If you like to bring your own motorcycle from your country to Sri Lanka, it is a long procedure while it is a costly one too. On the other hand Sri Lanka allows only 250 CC motorcycle on the public roads. So it is better to hire one on daily rental basis from a local company or club to ride along the roads here. It is better to join in a motorbike riding tour through an operator or through a company. Before you start your journey, it is better to book with these people. You don’t have to pay all the money in the first hand. You can pay half before the tour and the rest in part till you finish with the tour.
Take care you will have to pay for the meals and beverages while you are doing the tour, if it is not included in the package.
The food is not expensive here, likewise the soft drinks and the bottled mineral water are not so expensive. Soft drinks (Coca-Cola, Pepsi and local brands) and mineral water too are available in plastic bottles which you can store in your backpack without any difficulties. Fresh milk is available in packets while imported milk cartons too are available in most of the supermarkets. Some shop owners may charge some extra money for cooled products that had used their cool boxes. All the supermarkets offer biscuits, cakes and other food stuff that can be carried with you while traveling on the roads. Food is available everywhere in small restaurants and shops that are designed for tourists. Most of them offer Sri Lanka dishes. Anyhow ask them whether they contain large amount of chilies or chili powder in it.
There are plenty of phone vendors in all the towns and villages where they can provide top-up facility for your cellular phone account. You can view the newly added amount then and there. In many hotels and restaurants they offer Wi-Fi without any charges. Just get their password and go in to the internet to communicate with your friends and families. Also if you have small sized photographs you can upload them to your Facebook or to twitter account very easily.
We have noticed that those tourists taking motorcycle tour through ceylontusker.com used to prefer to ride the Honda Baja 250 CC motorbike as it is very easy to control and familiar one for most of the riders. It comes with front and rear disk brakes along with 6 gear positions, making it their first choice. Before to hire such a bike, check it thoroughly as it used to run through mud, sand and water. Some time you may need to ask them to oil the clutch cable as it may look so tight to operate. Also check the Fuel Shut off Valve’s Filter for any sediment that can get clogged while on the run and can lead to roadside stoppage. Check both the front and rear brake’s hydraulic fluid level. Check the chain slackness also before you ride it. Don’t forget to get the bike’s current revenue license and third party insurance paper from the provider.
You can mount a GoPro camera on your helmet or on the handle bar to record the tour. Most riders prefer the helmet version. If you forgot to bring it here, don’t worry you can hire it from here for a small fraction of cost.
If you are going on self-ride adventure trip, don’t forget to charge your Smartphone fully and upload some Apps of Sri Lanka which can help you along with your route. Petrol stations are available at major towns along the highways. Petrol is sold in liters according to the fitted digital counter mounted on the machine. So it will display the quantity of petrol and its total price. Air supply facility used to be available to inflate your tires by the side of the shed. WC facilities too are available in big gas stations. At the smaller gas stations ask the attendant for any assistance.
You can ride here without any trouble as most of the local people are very friendly. Many people can speak English. It is better to travel in group of 5 or 8 people. If you like to go on Sri Lanka motorbike tour take 9 days one or 15 days one as these will provide you with enough time on beaches, wildlife parks and other important places.
When riding a motorcycle you must have
your valid bike driving license,
valid revenue license of the bike,
third party coverage insurance.
It is recommended by the police to have your headlights on while you are riding even on the day time.
The rider and the pillion passengers must wear helmets when they are riding motorbikes.
Don’t honk your horn in the marked places like hospital and courts.
If your bike is sending out smoke from the exhaust pipe, stop your journey and contact a mechanic to correct it. Otherwise police may fine you.
Don’t try to enter or run in the Expressways as they prohibit two wheels and three wheels from entering in to them.
Don’t get angry while you are ridding as your life is valuable one.
In some places that are located near to the forests, you can happen to encounter wild animals like elephants, bear, leopard and snakes. Those elephants that are seen with the chains are domesticated ones and are not dangerous ones. If the mahout is available, you can feed the elephant with his approval. They like fruits a lot. You can buy them in the nearby shops to feed them.
