Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle

With a rich history that stretches over 3000 years, Sri Lanka houses some of the ancient cities in the world like Digamadulla, Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura. Between the soaring jungles of Sri Lanka lies these abandoned and overlooked cities and their splendid townships, palaces, hospitals, monasteries, and complexly carved theaters sculpted out of stone.

Anuradhapura

Out of all the ancient cities in Sri Lanka, the Kingdom of Anuradhapura is the most celebrated and the most exquisite. Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka’s third and the longest serving capital. This city is one of the oldest yes uninterruptedly inhabited cities in the world and is also known as one of the sacred cities of World Buddhists. Anuradhapura served as the capital of Sri Lanka from the Fourth Century BC to 11 Century and was also amongst the most important centres of political control and urban life in South Asia.

Sigiriya

Polonnaruwa

The second most ancient city in Sri Lanka is Polonnaruwa. The city boasts of having a highly advanced irrigation systems and it still provide water through irrigation to the farmers close to Polonnaruwa. Similarly, Digamadulla, the Eastern Kingdom of Sri Lanka is known to be the spiritual and agricultural capital of the Sri Lanka during the Anuradhapura kingdom.

Kandy

The last kingdom of Sri Lanka, the Kingdom of Kandy, is a testament to the never give up attitude of the Sri Lankan’s. After being burned and run over more than thrice by the Portuguese, the Kandyan Kingdom still shelters stunningly carved and built houses, temples and palaces unspoiled for close to 500 years.

Colombo is the window for most travellers to enter Sri Lanka. Once in Colombo make sure you take the train ride along the coast of Mount Lavinia or wander around the Talangama Wetland. Kandy

Kandy is Sri Lanka’s second largest city and it is located in the mountainous centre of the island. It is considered to be the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and was acknowledged as the world heritage site in 1988 by UNESCO. When in Kandy, make sure you visit the Temple of Tooth, Pinnewala elephant orphanage, Royal botanical garden, Tea museum, and Bahirawakanda temple.

Unawatuna Beach

Unwatuna beach is very famous among tourists across the globe and it also has been ranked in top 10 beaches of World by Discovery channel. The beach of Unawatuna is shielded with double layer of coral reef that makes it very safe for swimmers. You can also indulge in activities like snorkelling and diving.
