How to Assemble a Mountain Bike (MTB) - Bottom Bracket and Crank set

Updated on April 18, 2017

Chapter 2 - Bottom Bracket and Crankset

This hub belongs to a series of hubs about How to Assemble a Mountain Bike.

Now that the headset and the suspension fork are mounted and before assembling the handlebar and all the commands lets take care of the bottom bracket and crankset and assemble them into place.

First thing to do it is to clean and remove any dirt from the screw thread on the frame. This is very important to avoid ruin the bottom bracket thread.

The next explanation will only apply when using Shimano® cranksets or other equivalent.

Then start by screwing the right side bottom bracket bearing on the frame after having greased it very well.

To be able to tighten the bottom bracket it is needed another tool (it varies with the kind of bottom bracket you are using).

Repeat the process for the left side bracket and then insert the crankset axis through the bottom brackets after greasing it.

Now it`s time to assemble the left crank arm on the axis and fasten the bolt which will assure that the crank arm is into place.

In the end it is recommended to use a torque wrench to tighten the crank arm to the axis with the exact strength (this values are indicated by manufacturer).
