Fall is a great time to write holiday Hubs!

Writing for the Holidays

How to Get the Most Out of Your Seasonal and Holiday Hubs

Tomorrow is Halloween, and the winter holiday season will quickly follow after. The holidays bring out the creativity in many of us, making it a great time to write Hubs. Here are a few ways to ensure your seasonal and holiday Hubs get the success they deserve:

Write evergreen holiday Hubs. Be sure that your Hub is well-positioned to take advantage of next year's holiday traffic as well as this year's by writing on subjects that don't go out of date. Instead of "Best Halloween Costumes of 2013" consider writing a tutorial on how you made your (or your child's or pet's) Halloween costume.

Write on popular holiday subjects. Hubs that are particularly popular around the holidays include recipe Hubs, holiday DIY and craft tutorials, home decorating tips, Hubs about the history of common holidays, money-saving holiday ideas, and homemade gift Hubs. It can also be very helpful to look at successful holiday Hubs by other Hubbers to see what works.

Don't neglect Pinterest. Pinterest is a great source of traffic for holiday Hubs. In fact, holiday Pins typically become popular at least a month and a half in advance, so start Pinning early.

Take great photos. Most highly successful holiday Hubs include awesome original photos. Why not take some pictures this year as you decorate, cook, wrap presents, and go about your holiday routine. Even if you won't be able to write a seasonal Hub in time, you'll have everything you need to write it for next year.

Insights from a Talented Cook, Nurse, Mother, and Writer

You have so many beautiful and informative Hubs! What kinds of Hubs do you prefer writing? Is there a Hub you wrote that stands out as your favorite and if so, why?

Thank you! My Hubs tend to reflect what I’m learning more about at the time. I’m fascinated with the latest research/information on nutrition, parenting, exercise, health, and child development and writing Hubs gives me a way to share what I’ve learned with a larger audience. Right now I’m learning more about low carb, ketogenic, paleo foods to help control my blood glucose levels, since I have Type 1 diabetes.

You're a wife, mother, registered nurse, and Hubber (among other things and in no particular order). As a long-time fan of yours, I am always wondering: how do you do it all? How do you find balance? What advice can you give to us Hubbers who never seem to have enough hours in a day?

Well, I don’t always find the right balance. Many of the Hubs I’ve written are about finding balance and reducing anxiety and stress because this is something I have struggled with. I don’t think I will ever feel like there are enough hours in the day to accomplish everything I want to accomplish, so I’ve learned over the past year to focus on what is most important to me, which is my faith, family, friends, and work. When I keep my priorities in line, I am less stressed, more present, and content!

I love your food and recipe Hubs. Where do you draw inspiration from?

I am inspired by food that looks and tastes good! I watch the Food Network, surf the internet, and check-out recipe books from my local library. I also like unique recipes that include healthy food items. For example, I love adding avocados to smoothies or creating a squash and zucchini liquid in the blender to substitute for water in recipes, such as tacos. I’m always looking for new ways to “hide” veggies in the recipes I serve to my children.

You've been Hubbing for almost 2 years now. Congratulations! How did you get started and what's your favorite thing about HubPages?

I stumbled across HubPages after my sister inspired me to start up a website. At the time, I was drawn to HubPages because of the community of Hubbers. For the first time I had people commenting on my writing, giving me advice, and helping me navigate the online world.

My favorite thing about HubPages is the community of writers I’ve found here. I love meeting and learning from people across the world.

What advice could you share with Hubbers just starting out?

Stick with it, reach out to other Hubbers, and have fun! It’s an exciting adventure and I wish you the best!
