The Mind Needs Exercise Too

How a Regular Writing Schedule can Benefit You

The vast majority of us on HubPages are no strangers to writing (quite the opposite!), but many of us, including me, don't find the time to write as often as we'd like to. Just like it's important to exercise your body, writing is exercise for your mind. Here are some great reasons to make time for it on HubPages, on your own blog or website, or even in your private journal:

  • Writing is good for your mental health. It's an important way to work through your feelings and de-stress.
  • Writing helps you get motivatedWriting about your dreams and goals can have a noticeable positive effect on your life.
  • Writing makes you smarter. Writing has been shown to improve both logical and emotional functions of the brain.

Wow, pretty convincing, no? What better reason to schedule yourself a "writing workout" at least once a week? And you never know, some of the best Hubs grow unexpectedly out of simple writing practices. :)

Pro Tips

A friend can help you stick to your commitment.

Finding Time to Write Regularly

So, you're sold on the benefits of writing regularly. But how to find the time? Here are a few great tips on making time to write regularly and sticking to it:

  • Create a schedule. If you're like me, "when you find the time" really means "not very often," so be specific. Start with at least 20 minutes of writing at least 1 day a week. Put it on your calendar. Set a reminder in your phone. Whatever it takes. Once you get into the habit, it will come easier.
  • Commit with a friend. Get another writer to start practicing with you and (here's the important part) hold each other accountable. You don't have to be in the same place, or even the same state. The solidarity (and yes, culpability) can go a long way. Call, email, or text to check in, say hi, and make sure you're both on track.
  • Do a Time Inventory. If you're crazy busy, a time inventory is a great way to see exactly where your time is going and make conscious decisions about where to shave some off and where to put in a little extra.
