Announcing the 15th Annual Hubbie Awards!

Hi there, Hubbers!

We know how important this community is to all of you, and we want to let you know how much all of you mean to us, too. In honor of HubPages’ 15th birthday, we are thrilled to announce that voting will open next Monday, August 23rd, for the 10th Annual HubPages Hubbie Awards!

Last year, we took a hiatus from the Hubbie Awards, but this year, we’re back! You will have two weeks to cast your vote, so get started thinking about which Hubbers and articles you’d like to nominate.

If you're joining us for the first time this year, the Hubbie Awards are a contest held in honor of HubPages' birthday every August. As a community member, you’ll have the opportunity to choose your favorite articles and Hubbers and nominate them for a variety of awards. Each article or Hubber with the most votes in a particular category wins a cool HubPages prize, widespread community recognition, and a special profile badge. This year's categories are listed below.

Top

  • Best All-Around Article
  • Best All-Around Hubber
  • HubPages’ Lifetime Achievement Award (chosen by HP staff)

Hubber-Based

  • Most Helpful Hubber

  • Best Poet
  • Funniest Hubber
  • Best Photographer

Article-Based

You’ll only be able to vote once. Keep in mind that you don’t need to fill in a response for every category if you’re not sure who to vote for. Stay tuned for the opening of the polls next Monday!

Pro Tips

Affect vs. Effect

Affect and effect are two of the most commonly confused words in the English language. To avoid confusing them in your writing, try to remember that most of the time, affect is a verb and effect is a noun.

  • When used as a verb, affect means "to produce an effect upon (someone or something)." —Merriam Webster
  • When used as a noun, effect means "something that inevitably follows an antecedent (such as a cause or agent)." —Merriam Webster

To complicate matters, however, in some cases, affect can be used as a noun, and effect can be used as a verb. These uses, however, are much rarer.

  • When used as a noun, affect means "a set of observable manifestations of an experienced emotion."  —Merriam Webster
  • When used as a verb, effect means "to cause to come into being." —Merriam Webster
