Informative and Correct Article Titles

We're back again this week with more tips and tricks to increase traffic to your article. What are we tackling this week? Titles!

While it might be obvious, the title is the first thing a reader sees when clicking on your article. If you aren't catching the readers eye right off the bat with an informative title, chances are they will click elsewhere.

So, how do you maximize your chances of attractive viewers? Make your title creative, informative, interesting, and unique!

Use these tips when crafting a title:

  • Accurately describe the content of the article within the title! Try to put yourself in the reader's shoes and match their query- does the title and content match their intent?
  • Titles should be conversational and written for readers, not Google! Add some human personalization and don't come across as a robot.
  • Make them enticing to readers! The best way to do this is to look at Google results and compare the other titles of similar topics. Are they more enticing and include the exact keywords? Do they emotionally pull in the reader? Use these other articles to your advantage!
  • Include the main keywords that describe the article! If your article talks about how to install a coat rack, make sure to include keywords like "coat rack," "installing," and "how to"!
  • Use proper APA! If you aren't sure what APA is, capitalize my title is a great resource.
  • Use parenthese or brackets if it makes sense! Readers can see parenthese as a sneak peek about the content and are more likely to click on the result!
  • Keep them short to medium in length! Long titles will show up with an ellipsis in the Google results and it doesn't look great. Get the articles point across in a short, informative, and concise way.

When in doubt, be creative and state the obvious!

What Are Subheaders?

Chances are, some of your text capsules have the potential to include multiple different topics under your main one. This is where subheaders come into play!

By definition, a subheader is the "title under the main title, or above a specific section of writing. A header is the main title, and a subheading is the text below that adds information about the headline, or that sets apart sections of an article or book." In HubPages terminology, we call these types of titles H3's.

For example, say that you are writing an article about washing a dog. The main header would be "How to Properly Wash a Dog," and a possible subheader could be "Different Washing Techniques." This subheader allows the reader to navigate the article more efficiently.

How to format a subheader:

  1. Highlight the text that you've selected to be the subheader
  2. Click the "Format" feature in the text capsule toolbar
  3. Select "Heading 3"

It's really that simple! This format will enlarge the text and help it stand out, but it won't appear as large as the main title or other H2's within your article.

If you aren't using H3's in your articles, you are missing out!
