Are Seasons Capitalized?

When we write the days of the week, we capitalize their names. We do the same for months. However, when it comes to seasons, more often than not, you'll see them written in lowercase. Not that they're always written that way, but once in a while, you'll see them capitalized, suggesting that some capitalization rules apply to seasons after all.

The real question is, how do you know when to capitalize and when to not? Let's get into it!

Can you capitalize seasons?

The seasons, winter, spring, summer, and fall, do NOT require capitalization. Some people think these words are proper nouns and capitalize them using the rule for proper nouns. However, the seasons are general nouns, so they aren't capitalized.

When can you capitalize the names of the seasons?

There are a few exceptions that you've probably already thought of: when the name of the season is the first word of a sentence, then yes, you should capitalize it! Likewise, capitalize seasons when they are part of a proper name or title, like the Summer Olympics. Another loophole is poetry. If you are writing a verse that personifies a season, then go ahead and capitalize it!

If your sentence doesn't fall into these exceptions, leave it in lowercase!

Correct Capitalization Examples:

  • "This fall, you can cozy up with a warm tea and sit by the fire all night long."
  • "Los Angeles is known for having a smoggy summer."
  • "Only at the end of spring did temperatures rise above average."
  • "Soon came Summer wrapping me up in her humid arms."

Keep these rules in mind when writing your next summer article for HubPages!
