Cities, Countries, and Commas

While you're on the plane to your summer destination, it doesn't hurt to brush up on your grammar when it comes to formatting countries, cities, etc.

The general rule of thumb is, unless a place name is at the end of a stence and followed by a a punctuation mark, whenever you list a city, state, or a city and a country, you should place commas around it. This rule even applies when the country or state name is abbreviated.

Let's look at some examples:

  • I live in Los Angeles, California, but will be traveling down to Baja, Mexico, this summer.
  • Not only is New York, NY, a great place to live, but you're also super close to Boston, MA.
  • I'm traveling over to Manchester, England, in the northern part of the country.
  • While staying in London, UK, we will be traveling all over Europe this summer.
