It’s Time to E-A-T!

As you might have noticed, there was an algorithm update on 9/20 that caused traffic to dip. The good news is that we're expecting it to bounce back in the next few months.

In the meantime, you can do a couple of things to help increase traffic in the wake of this update and strengthen your content for future updates. The best thing you can do is learn about E-A-T, short for Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness, and apply it to your articles.

Let's dive in and learn the ins and outs of E-A-T.

1. E is for Expertise

Expertise means having a high level of knowledge or skill in a particular field. Google evaluates content to see if the writer has formal expertise, qualifications, and education on the subject matter.

However, some topics require less formal expertise. There is such a thing as having "everyday expertise," which Google certainly accounts for.

In their Quality Rater Guidelines Google says, "Some topics require less formal expertise. Many people write extremely detailed, helpful reviews of products or restaurants. Many people share tips and personal experiences on forums, blogs, etc. These ordinary people may be considered experts in topics where they have life experience. If the person creating the content has the type and amount of life experience to make them an "expert" on the topic, we value this "everyday expertise" and will not penalize the webpage."

We love our everyday experts here on HubPages; just make sure you clearly state your experiences!

2. A is for Authoritativeness

Authority is about reputation, particularly among other experts and influencers in the industry.

A great way to show authority on HubPages, even if you aren't the "go-to person" people come to about a specific topic, is to make claims that are widely accepted by other authorities in a field. Using facts backed by other scientists will prove to readers that you've done your research and aren't making things up.

3. T is for Trustworthiness

Trust is about the legitimacy, transparency, and accuracy of your article and its content. The best way to establish trust on HubPages is to always provide accurate, honest, and trustworthy information.

The bottom line is, make sure people know you, know your background, and you're transparent about where your information/research is coming from.

How to Improve E-A-T

Now that you know the basics of E-A-T, let's go over five helpful tactics that will strengthen your content and improve E-A-T.

  1. Add a "Real Name" to your HubPages profile: "The Real Name" is what appears at the top of each article, and we've found that having a real-sounding name there (vs. a username like fishnchips22) lends legitimacy to the article and boosts reader trust. However, it doesn't need to be your actual real name–it only needs to sound like one. To change your "Real Name," go to your Profile page, click "Edit Profile," enter a name in the "Real Name" field and click "Save Changes."
  2. Revisit your profile bio: Unlike your author bio–which has a 140-character limit and appears on individual articles–your profile bio can be long and detailed. Here you can outline the many reasons why you are an expert in the topics you write about.
  3. Update accolades, degrees, etc.: Most people don't like to brag, but when it comes to demonstrating E-A-T to Google, this is precisely what you should do. Have you won any awards in the topics you write about? How about degrees? Or have you been writing about the topic for years? Share your accomplishments in your profile/author bio!
  4. Upload a profile picture: One of the best ways to prove that you're a real person to search engines is to upload a photo of a person (vs. a cartoon, etc.).
  5. Link to other social media channels: Do you have other social networks that you write on about this topic or just want to share with readers? If so, feel free to link them to enhance reader trust and prove to Google that you're a real person.

By following these tips and applying E-A-T techniques to your articles, we are hopeful that traffic will bounce back and show readers and search engines that you know your stuff.

Thank you again for being valuable members of the HubPages community!
