The Annual Rage of Holiday Music

What Are the Most Successful Holiday Songs?

Last week, Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" hit number one in the United States for the first time ever—65 years after it was released! And at 78 years old, Lee is the oldest person to have a number-one song in history.

Every year, there is a global surge in Christmas music starting almost immediately after the Thanksgiving holiday wraps up. Artists and labels capitalize on the holiday season to release their own Christmas music, and Christmas standards from across the decades resurge in popularity.

Here are some more interesting bits about society's love for holiday songs:

  • "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby is not only the best-selling Christmas song but the best-selling single ever. This is in terms of physical copies, as streaming has changed how music sells. Still, it's sold an estimated 50 million copies.
  • Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has spent 12 weeks at number one since it reached the position in 2019. It's hit number one all over the globe, and its success, along with the album Merry Christmas, has led Carey to be considered the "Queen of Christmas."
  • Many of the oldest Christmas songs we still hear today were written back in the 1800s. (Some Christmas music came hundreds of years before that, but many weren't in English and were more like religious hymns.) "Silent Night" was written in 1816 and first performed as a song two years later in Oberndorf, Austria.

Writing Out Poetry and Song Lyrics

When it comes to writing out a poem or song lyrics, it is important to take your time to ensure they're written and formatted correctly. Here are a few suggestions:

  • In many instances, it might be best to copy and paste them from another trusted site. Many times, poems and songs aren't written as you would if writing for a publication. Abbreviated words, slang, and line breaks are all very important to get right, and therefore, copying it directly can be a lot faster and more accurate.
  • Placing lyrics in quotes with a forward slash (/) indicating a line break is the best way to write them out. You do not need to also italicize them as it begins to be too much.
  • When composing in HubPages, many authors like to place lines of a poem in the quote formatting tool in the text box. This is a good idea as it helps differentiate the line from the rest of the text.
  • If you are inserting an entire poem, try placing it in its own text box or at least making sure the title comes right before the poem as a way of highlighting it as one entire piece.
