I consider them to very friendly, loyal and much like a "real" child. I have two of my own so yes, I am being pro-maltese at this moment. They are very nice, full of love and want to be with you at all times. But it all depends on the dog. My first maltese, (he) didn't like to be alone at all, he cried when I went to school, or out for a bit. So I decided to get a second maltese (she). She does mind being alone but also she doesn't mind since the male is home. I DO spoil them really bad!! But they are truly a great add to my life. ((I am only 22yrs old)) and I got them when I was 16-17years old and they were both my responsibility. So I guess thats why I consider them my children and not my dogs. hope this helps.
