Pastel colors are different than other types of art materials that you would use to draw also to make different paintings the only thing that stays the same is that pastel crayons have color also just like the markers and color pencils. The reason that pastel colors are different is because its a material that is mixed with a binder and usually the binder is mixed with the chalk. However up to these days chalk is being used for many other activities pastel colors are what let you as the artist layer and then be able to mix bright colors to come up with a more soft gentle feel to the artwork. Now this type of pastel drawing form has been a favorite of some famous artist such as Manet,Degas, as well as Renoir.

Before you start to buy some pastel colors you got to make sure that you choose the right type of pastel colors that you think would best help make your artwork look good. Select to buy a small package of pastel colors to start or you can also purchase a kit that includes a dozen of colors but for the most part go for a package of 12 pastel colors. The softness of the pastel stick are good to use for the detail of the drawings. Another thing to know about pastel colors is that each one can also be used as a pencil for its creation of fine lines.

Find the perfect type of drawing paper for your pastel drawings make sure that the paper that you select has a good tooth and feel of material one that as you use the pastel colors to draw the ink will get the pigment of the colors right and keep the pigment ink in its place. Some other types of art paper that you can use for your art drawings are charcoal paper, and sandpaper. The next thing that you are gonna do is to gather a few stumps that you may have in order to blend and knead the rubber eraser which then takes off the pigment away.

Furthermore the stumps that are coming from the cylinders are the ones that go with the layers of paper you can use those cylinders to blend the colors if you do not want to get your fingers dirty that is and as you notice that the stump gets dirty then that's when you peel off a layer of paper. After that if you want your eraser to be pliable what you can do is knead it you take the knead push it closely to your drawing and lift the pigment off.

Know what you are going to draw before you start to color with the pastels

In art if you want your own drawing to come out a great one it's best if you first and foremost plan out in a pencil sketch what it is that you want to draw so that way you wont have any complications by the time you start doing it with the pastel colors.

A pastel coloring technique that you can use......

When coloring with pastel colors begin by shading using the most darkest tone into the parts of the drawing where you want the darker colors to be then just as you continue to color you keep on adding more darker colors while at the same time you also layer and blend each color.

Clean up your artwork mess each time you finish working

Something that you should know is that by the time it comes for you to clean up you should not blow away the pastel color dust with your mouth or else there will be a greater chance of you inhaling it which in returns can cause some irritation of the airways. If for some reason you are the type of person that has a sensitive airway then one of the solutions that you can try is by wearing a dust mask to cover your mouth that way all of the dust from the pastel colors doesn't get inside you.

  • If you find yourself in your work-space working in a horizontal surface then just take the drawing that you drew and take it outside in order to dust off any of the excess of dust color that it may have.
  • Another object that you can also use is an easel which has the ability to take away all of the dust without making your space spotless and clean although you are still going to have to clean up the floor with a mop but it will be worth it.

Maintain your hands clean and free of dirt

Take away all of the color spots from your hands by wiping them with hand cleaning wipes or else the extra pigment of color stains that may stick on the hands may blend and mix with the colors that are already applied in the drawing. Warning: watch out for your fingers because they can also have color stains in them and if you are not careful then you can also accidentally ruin your drawing and you don't want to do that.

Make sure to clean each pastel color stick when you finish using it

To clean up the color stick that was in use grab a dry paper towel to make the other pigments that got picked up from the drawing disappear another good idea that can work with the cleaning of the color sticks is if you put them in a batch of rice but watch out the rice has to be uncooked.

Last but not least.....

Apply a spray of fixative to your piece of artwork so that way the pigment of the colors wont fade away. Something important to remember is that fixative is a chemical spray that is toxic so it is imperative that you follow the instructions for the use of this chemical. The fixative spray is also a great tool if you want to separate the color pigment layers from your artwork it also helps make new additional layers without destroying the layers that are already in the drawing.
