Motivate the Lazy Masses
To work or not to work.
Why does it seem that so many people these days put so much energy into trying to get out of work rather than embracing it? I am always amazed watching people go through extraordinary efforts to avoid doing work when in many instances it would be easier just to complete the task.
Perhaps it has something to do with our upbringing or our perceived values. Maybe our work ethic is based on our culture or surroundings, or perhaps some people are just lazy. In any case, there are many of us who are tasked with ensuring that our workforces put in a fair days work for a fair days pay.
Many in this country blame unions for this laid back approach to getting things done. This is a misconception. Actually unions foster competition and trade and actually boost the economy in many ways. Unfortunately many unions get a bum rap from a few corrupt bosses.
As leaders we cannot allow excuses such as "unions" prevent us from the task at hand. The bottom line is that regardless of the reason, it all boils down to motivating people. The first thing to realize is that most people want to do the right thing! No matter what industry or field you are in it always seems to be that small percentage of workers that make the job miserable for the rest of us.
In future posts we will explore different techniques on how to motivate even the most disgruntled employee. Remember, everyday is a new beginning!
