   I don't know of any actual reasons to be "careful" in terms of getting in "trouble" or anything, but then I am relatively new here, myself.
   
   The only advice I would offer is, out of courtesy, make sure the people you follow are people you're legitimately interested in "following". There are thousands of "hubbers" writing articles on just about any non-XXX subject you could imagine, so there's no reason to just randomly follow people.
   
   Be patient and build your network of "friends" based on an actual interest in what they have to say, and it will ultimately reward you with a much more enjoyable experience here on HubPages.

   There is no penalizing in hubpages for following someone on the contrary it is highly encouraged. I am not sure if you know what SEO is. But SEO wise it is a good idea to follow people in hubpages..

   I seriously doubt that there is anything negative that could come from the people on hubpages.  There is nothing that could possibly bad come from following . . . .anyone that I've ever encountered on this website.  If someone ever threatens you, then you should contact the staff about that.  I've never heard of anything like that happening though.  I'm pretty certain that something like that would not be tolerated here.
   
   Hubpages is on the "up and up," there's some shady folk everywhere, but your intuition will tell you who you ought to follow, trust yourself, you've got good instincts.

   If you follow everyone then it looks like spam.  There may be some good SEO stuff in terms of links, but like with other backlinking methods, too much too fast looks suspisous to a computer program and it may penalize you (your hubscore) for what is assumed to be attempting to boost your stats unfairly.  If you just follow those you enjoy reading you should be fine.

   I think you misunderstood.  As CDL said, it is how many and how fast that can negatively affect your hubber score.
   
   Follow people you really want to read and only for that reason.  It isn't a popularity contest.

   No, am usnig it for a whole year, and i never read this kind of things from any official source, and i personally think, there is nothing bad to follow any one there! you are free to do anything except SPAM

   I would have to say not just Hubpages, but anywhere in the internet world.   You do not know who is creditable and who isn't these days.   I would do a little bit of reseach on the person first  of all.   See what sites they got to, and who they follow.  There are all sorts of scammers out there, and people would love for you to follow, and the moment you do, they have your ID.   I think it is sad that this world has come to this point in time.

    it is always good to be cautious in our actions. That said, it is best to read a few hubs of that person before following, get to like the topics, know the hubber and hopefully enjoy the topics you will read in the future. Something that interest you...you enjoy it and hubbers love it too.
