I asked two people I know to read it, and neither of them understood the connotative meaning of the story. Can someone give me input please?
I read it as children acting out the story of the English invading the US, then at the end some people went to heaven and some didn't. Am I anywhere close?

Nope. Picked it up in the second paragraph. The references to physical features and gold etc made it obvious
