What do friends and family have to do to follow my hubs?
As others have mentioned, "Following" a user is a members-only feature, and your friends and family will have to create a HubPages account to receive email updates when you publish a new Hub. However, as colorfulone mentions, they can also check your profile periodically to see any new content you've created.
Don't forget, you can also post your new articles to social media to let everyone know when you've written something new.
To use the built-in follow feature that is part of HubPages, people have to join the site.
Do they know what the URL is to your HubPages profile?
Or, do they know what your user ID is on HP?
You would need to let them know how to find your hubs.
