   I think college should be experienced at some point in life no matter your age. While I think it is good to accomplish it in your youth, I think that many who go later tend to appreciate it more. Many young students see college as similar to high school, and thus take it as a burden rather than a gift. I think it really depends on the particular individual. Your question is good but difficult to answer. I personally feel I would do much better now in the classes I took when i was 18. Perhaps that is related to the maturity that comes with age?

   I think it is best to start right after high school, while you're still used to a regular class schedule. Going at this point in your life means you will be the same age as most of the other students.
   
   Many students who choose to "take a year off" after high school or during college are considerably less likely to go back.
   
   There are many non-traditional students (older than 25) who are very successful in college but it can be a struggle to fit it into a schedule around work and children.

   The second you have enough money, and you're willing to make sure it doesn't go to stupid stuff like beer.  The longer you wait the less money (consider promotions, salary raises) you'll make in the private sector, and less you will have in savings over the course of a life time.

   When your child has finished or is close to finishing highschool. When the child is still in high school, the college only allows them to take two classes in one semester.

   While in high school, most high schools now offer classes where you can start earning college credits. If you don't start as soon as you graduate you will continue to push it off until it's too late.

   Straight after high school is always the best because you won't forget what you've learned in high school that you'll need to continue on with in college but just because you're older doesn't mean you won't do as well. If you really want to have a career in your life that pays well then going back anytime doesn't hurt, it might be a little harder on you though but if you're willing and able, it'll be worth it in the end.
