Given the limited hours that children spend at school, what subjects do you feel should be taught?
We know that 'reading, writing, and 'rithmetic are the three Rs. Let's say that we have room for six more subjects during the one week period. What subjects would you suggest from Primary School children to make them happier and more successful in their adult lives?
Science - physics; science - natural history; art; PE - gym and field sports; history; music. No particular order of preference, they are all important to produce well rounded and well educated children. When I taught, all children loved these subjects. A useful addition to these and the 3Rs, learned as part of the lessons, would be the effective use of a library.
Children love to learn, and, contrary to the belief of the the new age, politically correct educational theorists, they like to get it right, not look like twits when some one outside of school says what the teacher should have said, 'no, that's wrong, this is what it should be, this is how it should be done...'
Mitestarossa, I think you might be just a little biased towards music. Thanks for answering though.
MickS. Obviously someone with experience. But most of these are already introduced into the majority of schools. I was hoping for something a little bit more 'outside the square.' Thanks for your comments, too. You get my vote.
In light of our pro conflict, militaristic national leaders, it seems that training in conflict resolution and mediation might prove advantageous for all earth's creatures! I'd find this much more useful to our budding minds than memorizing dead president's birthdates, states and major cities, or meaningless propaganda that justifies past wars and future conflicts!
I think, we've taught enough of Science ... let them, who have to, and make it their Vocation.
Reckon, its about time we taught our kids, Good Manners ... The Respect for Knowledge, their Teachers and Elders... above all ... Humanity.

What do you think that should be taught as "core" subjects in school ?Many states are requiring that cursive writing and multiplication tables be taught, along with reading, science and Home Economics. What do you think that should be required in today's computerized world?

What if you could have chosen your religion? Most people are told what they will believe from birth. What would happen if children were taught various religions and arguments against then allowed to chose for themselves once they have had a bit of life experience.
