Why would it make kids more mature? I'm not seeing it. But, as for the question, no. The cost of education, which has been out of control, would just shoot up a whole bunch more, and I see no reason to think it would improve academic performance by much if any.
There's no particular reason kids should go to college immediately the fall after they graduate. I know, lots of parents think so, but for the most part, there's no compelling reason for it. The question could be answered this way: The economy has nothing to do with it at all, and raising costs will only hurt, so, no for that, and for the second part, school should do far less teaching "community organization" and far more "how to make decisions". Not "what decisions to make" but "how" to make them. It should teach far less "politics as morality" and far more logic and reasoning.
