Bed Jumping: The New Craze That's Sweeping the World!

Updated on September 12, 2012

Strange But True

There's a new craze taking the Internet by storm, and now it is being taken into the outside world, thanks to a few hotels who have realised the potential, and I hasten to add, the silliness of it. Bed Jumping!

Yeah, I know what you are going to say. A few celebrities are getting quite good at this. But no, it is not that sort of bed jumping. This is literally jumping on the bed for fun! The point is, the art of jumping into a position and trying to get the best picture taken.

Carefully positioning the camera, and then setting up the timer, you take a running jump up onto the bed, and without breaking anything, including your neck, the aim is to capture the best picture for posterity. Trying to defy gravity, you try, and I mean try, to get horizontal, or upside down, back flip or just look plain stupid. Some of the positions just seem totally impossible, and I am sure most are done with quite an amount of alcohol involved!

The first people to come up with this bizarre idea was the web site, Hotelsbycity.com, on it's Bed Jump Blog. And just like anything strange and somewhat dangerous it took of like a rocket. And did you know that the web site Flickr has over 17,000 pictures of this strange new sport! No? neither did I.

In May of this year the InterContinental Hotel chain decided that it was a good money earner and jumped at the chance to stage the event at their Hotel. They started with a memorable promotion, this included the world's biggest bed jump. Over 20,000 people world wide joined in, at different locations around the world. Shanghai, Paris London and New york. They had four of the worlds biggest beds shipped in for the event.

There have been many different types of Craze over the years, from taking photo's of yourself in different locations,to dancing or standing on your head. I remember a few years ago, the craze was to take a garden gnome abroad with you, and take photo's of it near famous buildings and landmarks!.

I think what is so bizarre about this, is the fact that manufacturers have jumped, if you will excuse the expression, on the potential of this new craze and they are selling different types of beds and trampolines especially made to take all this weight, on the Internet. I came across one site called Alibaba.com, (which sounds like it should be selling magic carpets not trampolines,) .This website sells a round trampoline jumping bed, Children's jumping bed trampolines, bouncy castles and jumping bed bouncer! Nothing like jumping on the bandwagon, is there? oops sorry, Bed.

If you want to spend your holidays doing this crazy craze, er, thing, why don't you book yourself into a hotel courtesy of Hotelsbycity.com, which cater for energetic young things, and not so young!, and let off some steam by trying your hardest to look stupid, cool or just scared to death, just so you can tell your children and grandchildren just how great you were. I am sure the hotel insurance will cover you for injuries! No I didn't think so either! Still, I am sure there is plenty of room in the downstairs car park for plenty of paramedics to park if there is an emergency. So off you go, and have fun!!
