Below you will find information on the different 2013 children's movies selected. This includes pictures, trailers and general information about who it's most suitable for. I hope you enjoy this selection and are able to come back and tell us all how much you and your child enjoyed their adventure at the cinema!

Oz the Great and Powerful 2013
Oz the Great and Powerful 2013

Oz the Great and Powerful

Release Date: March 8th, 2013

Genre: Adventure/Fantasy

Directed By: Sam Raimi

Starring: Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, James Franco, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, Joey King, Bruce Campbell

Synopsis: Ever wondered how the wizard that helped Dorothy get out of Oz and back to Kansas got to Oz? Well now you can find out more about the wizard's story and how he survived so long in Oz. How did he manage to become the all powerful wizard and not fall victim to the evil witch and her sister? Especially after you find out he started life as an illiusionist, in a circus, in the real world.

Let the beauty of Oz lure you back into this classicaly based fairytale.

Suitable For: There will be some evil witches and some slightly scary scenes for really young children so parents will have to decide how sensitive their little one is. However, I would suggest a parent accompanies their young children to this film.

Although I think the movie looks amazing, I really can't see it becoming a classic like the original Wizard of Oz. A male lead just doesn't have the same appeal as Judy Garland did as Dorothy, so this is unlikely to be the top new kids movie of 2013.

The Croods
The Croods

The Croods

Release Date: March 22nd, 2013

Genre: Animation/Adventure/Comedy/Family

Directed By: Chris Sanders, Kirk De Micco

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Emma Stone

Synopsis: Imagine when we lived in caves and everything outside was dangerous. One cave-man dad decides to protect his family by telling them bedtime stories that consist of the same plot over and over again. Young cave dweller leaves cave as they are curious. They are killed as soon as they leave the cave. All the kids know not to leave the cave, except for the daughter who just wants to take a peek.

When she finally gets outside the cave, she finds a whole new world waiting to be explored. Her family come to save her and join in on the journey and adventure and become closer than ever.

Suitable For: I think this could be fun for all the family. It's an animated film so has some lovely sets and great imagery. Also parents will love the storyline of a protective father that doesn't want his children to ever be in danger. There is lots of humor and adventure to keep you and the children occupied for the whole movie.

The Croods looks like it could be one of the best animated movies 2013.

Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

Release Date: May 3rd 2013

Genre: Superhero/Science Fiction/Action

Directed By: Jon Favreau

Starring: Gynewth Paltrow, Robert Downney Jr, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Faran Tahir

Synopsis: Iron Man 3 is back and it's bigger than ever!

Tony Stark may have to pay the ultimate price for his past deeds. He stands to lose that which he loves most - Pepper Pots. When an enemy from Tony's past comes for payback he decides to show the world that superheroes don't exist and goes out of his way to destroy Tony Stark's life.

This terrorist believes he is teaching Iron Man and Tony Stark an important lesson. However, Tony will have to learn it and beat the villain at his own game, if he has any chance of saying Ms Pots.

Suitable For: As there are a lot of bombs, explosions, kidnap and a little torture, I'd suggest this isn't suitable for really small kids.

Since Iron man 3 is one of the biggest upcoming Superhero movies of 2013, with great special effects and characters that people have come to love, it's probably a teenagers best option at the cinema this year. Of course big kids at heart will also enjoy this movie a lot as it also has other themes of love, despair and did I mention lots of special effects?

Epic
Epic

Epic

Release Date: May 24th, 2013

Genre: Animation/Adventure/Family

Directed By: Chris Wedge

Starring: Beyonce Knowles, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Knoxville, Aiz Ansari, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Blake Anderson, Judah Friedlander

Synopsis: If you loved Fern Gully and A Bugs life then this will be the film for you this year. This animated movie is a cross between the two movies.

When a teenage girl finds a whole new world under her feet in the garden, she's caught in the middle of a war. She has to help the Leaf men protect the garden against the evil forces. At first she can't believe her eyes, but soon finds herself in the middle of an adventure beyond her wildest dreams.

If she doesn't help defeat the evil forces it could be her world that pays the final price too.

Epic is expected to be a big hit as it's from the creators of Ice Age and Rio.

Suitable For: An animated movie it does have some dark scenes in it. Since there's a war going on there are evil characters that take the form of birds and other creepy crawlies. On the other hand, there are lots of non-threatening characters such as flowers and little men dressed as leaves.

Again, very young children should be accompanied by an adult for this one. Even if it's just for them to hide their face at the slightly darker scenes.

Monsters University
Monsters University

Monsters University

Release Date: June 21st, 2013

Genre: Animation/Comedy/Family

Directed By: Dan Scanlon

Starring: John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Kelsey Grammer and Jennifer Tilly.

Synopsis: This summer our favorite monsters are returning to the big screen! The first Monster Inc movie was phenomenal and kids and adults enjoyed it together.

Now Disney Pixar are taking us back to when Sully and Mike were at university, learning to be scary monsters for Monsters Inc. Turns out they weren't always the best of friends and used to play pranks on each other. Expect more gags and laughs if the trailer is anything to go by. Great family fun and humor.

Suitable For: I am a huge fan of Monsters Inc. It made me go through so many emotions while watching it from laughter to tears. At no point did I even think of it as a kids movie. It was great for grown-ups too and I expect the same from Monsters University. I'm hoping Monsters University will be one of the best new kids movies 2013. If, on the other hand, you are looking for great kids movies to watch on dvd then you should check out the best kids movies 2012.

However, there were a few scary scenes in the first movie, when the monsters were being Scarers. Since they are learning to do this job, there might be a few of these types of scenes again, but most of them are short and made into jokes.

Despicable Me 2

Parents and adults might just want to go and see this since Al Pacino is the voice of a new character in the 2nd movie in this series.

The Smurfs 2
The Smurfs 2

The Smurfs 2

Release Date: July 31st 2013

Genre: Adventure/Family/Fantasy/Comedy

Directed By: Raja Gosnell

Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Christina Ricci and Hank Azaria.

However, the Smurfs would never let Gargamel join them so he decides to make his own Smurfs called the Naughties.

You're probably wondering why Gargamel would create more creatures he hates, but he has a really good reason. He makes evil Smurfs so he can harness Smurf power. Unfortunately, his plans don't work out and the Naughties are unable to harness Smurf power. He realizes he needs Smurfette to help him with his plans and kidnaps her.

The rest of the Smurfs follow Gargamel back to the human world and figure out he's taken Smurfette to Paris. How romantic!

They have to work together again, with the New York friends they made in the first film, to fly to Paris and save Smurfette.

Percy Jackson 2 - Sea of Monsters
Percy Jackson 2 - Sea of Monsters

Percy Jackson 2 - Sea of Monsters

Instead, we'll see more of Percy's powers and his special relationship with water. He and his friends go in search of the Golden Fleece and have to battle sea monsters and other mythical creatures.

Why have they gone to retrieve the Golden Fleece? Well it's life and death of course. Who's life hangs in the balance? Well you'll have to watch the film to figure that one out!

Suitable For: All ages and genders.

Thor 2 - Into Darkness
Thor 2 - Into Darkness

Thor 2 - Into Darkness

Release Date: November 8th 2013

Genre: Superhero/Action/
Fantasy/Adventure

Directed By: Kenneth Branagh

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins

Synopsis: Thor picks up where he left after the Avengers and is saving the nine Realms from a great evil. No-one seems sure what this evil is or where it's coming from, which kinda makes it hard to battle. All we know is that this is an ancient evil that doesn't like to show it's face. It sounds very similar to the evil they had in the last season of Smallville to me.

The purpose of this evil is to take over the universe and cut out the light. Why do they always want to surround us in darkness? How would we know we were in darkness if there's no light to cast a shadow?

Anyway, only Thor can defeat this evil with the help of Jane Foster (why do I have the feeling that love is the only thing that can fight this evil darkness?).

Suitable For: Another superhero movie which would be suitable for older chidren. Probably more of a boys or guys movie. Would most suit kids who love Iron Man, Fantastic Four, the Avengers and X-Men.

Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games 2 - Catching Fire
Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games 2 - Catching Fire

The Hunger Games 2 - Catching Fire

Release Date: November 21st 2013

Genre: Science Fiction/Action/Drama

Directed By: Gary Ross

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson

Synopsis: Well it looks like The Hunger Games 2 titled Catching Fire will continue to follow the books as much as they can.

For those who watched the first movie and haven't read the books, then you might find it quicker to buy the books than wait for the films to come to a cinema near you.

If you have already read the books, then you'll know the poster for the movie above alludes to the scene where Katniss has another interview and her wedding dress goes up in flames.

Non-book readers will wonder what I am talking about so let me up date you a little on the premise of the 2nd Hunger Games movie.

Katniss and Peta survived their Hunger Games with some quick thinking from Katniss. However, President Snow realizes Katniss has upset the Districts and now there is likely to be a revolution.

This years Hunger Games are special as it's the 75th anniversary of the Hunger Games. President Snow decides that the previous Hunger Games winners will go back in the ring and fight for their District once again. Since Katniss is the only surviving female winner from District 12 she's automatically in the ring.

The other winners are chosen from the other Districts and Peta and Katniss have to come up with a whole new plan to get through a Hunger Games, which is basically an All Stars edition. This time no contestant can hide their strengths or weaknesses as they've already been seen on tv.

Be prepared to meet some new Hunger Games winners from previous contests. Not all of them are going to be the same age as Katniss and Peta as every winner is a possibility to go back in the arena. Also, there's a new Hunger Games arena this year. However, the clock is ticking for Katniss and Peta.

On top of that, there are rumors that District 13 still exists. If the citizens of District 1-12 revolt, then Snow will punish Katniss. This is also likely to be one of the best book to movie adaptations in 2013.

Suitable For: Teens and older as the seconds installment of the Hunger Games will continue to have gruesome deaths.

The Hunger Games 2 was actually givien the go ahead before the first movie aired and it did really well at the box office. I think it could be one of the most popular kids movies in 2013 and I can see lots of teens with mockingbird pendants or necklaces. It's also one of the most anticipated movies of 2013.

Which of these movies will be the best new kids movie 2013?
