Tina Turner

Updated on January 7, 2010

Nutbush

On November 26, 1939 Anna Mae Bullock was born in a small spot called Nutbush, Tennessee. Her mother was Zelma (Currie) Bullock, a factory worker. Her father was Floyd Richard Bullock, a Baptist deacon, farm overseer, and factory worker.

Anna Mae’s parents split up when she was 10. She lived with her grandmother until her grandmother’s death six years later. Anna Mae moved to St. Louis to live with her mother and sister when she was sixteen.

Ike

Anna Mae’s sister took her to several nightclubs in the city. One night at the Club Imperial, Bullock met Mississippi-born rhythm and blues musician Ike Turner. She later asked him if she could sing for him. Anna Mae was persistent and Ike decided to let her perform for him. Anna Mae became an occasional vocalist in Ike's shows at the age of 18. She went by the name "Little Ann." She became the spotlight of a soul revue led by Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm band.

Anna Mae Becomes Tina

In 1960, a singer was scheduled to record the song, "A Fool in Love". The singer didn't appear. Anna Mae Bullock stepped in and recorded the vocals instead. "A Fool in Love" was a huge R&B hit reaching #2, crossing over to the top 30 of the US pop chart. Anna Mae Bullock became Tina Turner. Ike’s band became The Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

Ike and Tina

Tina raised four sons and endured a tumultuous relationship with, then husband, Ike.

36 Cents and a Mobil Gasoline Credit Card

Tina and Ike eventually parted in 1976. She fled the marriage (and the Revue) with 36 cents and a Mobil gasoline credit card.

Because of the frequent beatings she received from her former husband Ike Turner, she had to have reconstructive surgery on her nose.

Rebirth!

Tina Turner went on to mega-stardom.

Along with being a great singer and stage performer, she is also an actress.

Tina and Eric

Her accolades are too many to list, read, and would be too repetitious.

Let’s just say for now:

She is the world's most successful female rock artist ever. Record sales: over 60 million from 1983-1999. She’s been very busy since then as well.

She has sold more concert tickets than any other female performer in history.

Tina Turner Highway

In 2001, Tennessee State Route 19 between Brownsville and Nutbush was named "Tina Turner Highway".

Turner was listed on Rolling Stone's list "The Immortals — The Greatest Artists of All Time".

Turner is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and two of her recordings, "River Deep - Mountain High" (1999) and "Proud Mary" (2003), are in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

She is an 8-time Grammy Award-winner.

Her legs were noted specifically as she was honored by President George W. Bush in the East Wing of the White House during a reception for the Kennedy Center in 2005.

She was a “Private Dancer” in 1984 before she would “Break Every Rule” in 1986. She had a “Foreign Affair” in 1989 and would she ever believe in her “Wildest Dreams” in 1996, that she would be loved “Twenty Four Seven" in 1999?

Compilations and Other Releases

I wish I could have seen “Tina Live In Europe” in 1988. She was “Simply The Best” in 1991. She made some “Collected Recordings” going back as far as Ike when she was “A Fool In Love”. She was a “Proud Mary”. She said “I Idolize You” but there ain’t no “River Deep-Mountain High” in “Nutbush City Limits”. She was a “Bold Soul Sister”. She said “I Don’t Wanna Fight” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It”? "Honky Tonk Women" want to “Come Together”, “I Want To Take You Higher”, but “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”. "It's Gonna Work Out Fine". Some may have thought she was a “Ball Of Confusion” but she had A "Whole Lotta Love". She knew "A Change Is Gonna Come". She was "Addicted to Love". She said "When I Was Young" I played "Let's Pretend We're Married", but "Don't Turn Around". In "Steamy Windows" "What You Get Is What You See". It may be "The Best" so "Let's Stay Together".

Divas Live

She joined Elton John, Cher, LeAnn Rimes, Brandy, Faith Hill, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Treach, and Chaka Khan for “Divas Live” and it was live from New York’s Beacon Theatre on April 13, 1999.

Her “Tina Live” in 2009 showcased her live performances.

Better Be Good To Me

A prisoner of your love
entangled in your web

Hot whispers in the night
I'm captured by your spell... captured!

Oh yes, I'm touched by this show of emotion
Should I be fractured by your lack of devotion?

Should I?
Should I?

Oh, you'd better be good to me
That's how it's gotta be now

'cause I don't have no use
for what you loosely call the truth

and you'd better be good to me
Yeah, better be good...
Come on, come on, be good to me...

I think it's also right
that we don't need to fight

just to stand face to face
And you present your case

Yes I know you keep telling me that you love me
and I really do wanna believe

But did you think I'd just desert you in blind faith?
Oh, sure baby! Anything to please you,

but you'd better be good to me!
That's how it's gotta be now

'cause I don't have the time
for your overloaded lines

and you'd better be good to me
Yeah, you'd better be good... good to me

And I really can't see
why it's so hard to be
good to me

And y'know, I don't understand
What's your plan

that you can't be good to me
What I can't feel, I surely cannot see

Why can't you be good to me?
And if it's not real, I do not wish to see

why can't you be good to me
Why can't you be
good to me?

Why can't you be
good to me?

Be good to me...
'Cause I don't have no use
for what you loosely call the truth

And I don't have the time
for your overloaded lines

so you'd better be good to me
Yeah, you'd better be good

Better be good to me

Let's Stay Together
