   The answer there varies greatly with the musical era to which you are addressing. Prior to the early 70's it could have easily come down to Chuck Berry or Johnny Rivers and I would go with Rivers although his abilities on the guitar were not as outfront as Berry. In the post 70's era, I think it is hands down got to be  Mark knofler (Dire Straits).  WB

   i had the pleasure of seeing your avatar in concert this past february and i must say, as bassists go,.. wow
   
   its soo damn hard to choose realy,... all of the great ones seem to specialize in thier own personal sound,... i love to hear clapton,.. but i'm just as spell bound by any opening riff from waylon,... and to those who say waylon isnt rock,... you can kiss my a**,... then theres hendrix,... chet atkins,... nugent,... BBking,...
