Does it help to get more traffic?

I know at least a few people who do.

I tried it once or twice but didn't see any effect.

I personally don't backlink or promote much - if a hubs going to take off, it's going to take off.

Sure if I promote it, it may take off two weeks earlier, but what if I'm promoting a hub that just never had a chance, anyway? I'd rather write more hubs.

I've seen it help on a short term basis, like the immediate 24 hours after.

Yes I do and get a quick increase in readers, but can't say the same for revenue.  Still think it is worth it though because it only takes a few minutes.

    What is pinging?

"Ping-o-Matic! Updates multiple services and search engines about updates to weblog content, with a single ping."

"Ping" is essentially like ringing on the bell in a hotel lobby. A simple alert.

My hubs get indexed in less than 24 hours anyway so tehre is very little point in pinging.

All my own websites are hosted on wordpress, so I just updated the ping list in the general settings on there with about 100 services so I can be sure that my smaller websites are still indexed.

Pingler.com is a good place to ping your sites

Pinging helps to get your site noticed, and that's always a good thing.  A good free ping service to use is pinggoat.com

Also it is particularly recommended to ping after every new blog post.  So this same practice can be used for HubPages too.
