   It's not absolutely necessary. It's a personal choice for an individual to decide whether to commit their life wholeheartedly to one special person. It takes a lot of courage to make that commitment to one person and to live life together and to face whatever comes their way on their journey through life. Getting married is the easier part but maintaining a healthy marriage is the more challenging part which requires a lot of constant hard work and patience. Certainly it's a rewarding commitment but you have to be totally committed to each other, otherwise it can be a painful experience resulting in broken dreams, broken relationships and broken families.

   Legally recognised parenthood/family can exist without marraige, just as marraige can exist without offspring.

      The father's rights under law stem from being the father, not the mother's husband.  That is why unmarried and divorced fathers still have them.  Although the courts tend to favor giving custody to the mother if they live seperately no matter what her marital status is.

   Marriage is not necessary... Nor is it something that can be monolithically defined..
   
   Where Christians have gone, though, they try to erect constructs with an ethnocentric bias, shut out whatever was there formerly, and then proclaim there way as the "only" way that ever has been or ever will be...
   
   Of course....their way is then only maintained through discourse, public show, or inquisition....while the rulemakers decide that they, themselves, don't need to follow them...
