For the sporty ones out there (or just in general if you prefer) what's the worst injury you've sustained whilst participating in your favourite sport?

For me it was when i dislocated my left knee while playing rugby, I had surgery last year and the physio/rehab is going well so far *crosses fingers*

As a runner I've suffered a few nagging injuries, lingering quadriceps pain, a few cases of shin splints, but the most painful one was actually a bruied toe. Now admittedly, this makes me sound like a wimp. Nothing was broken, but it hurt like the dickens. I was doing a 50k run in the mountains and I must have stubbed that same left toe about 8 times on tree roots while going down hill during the course of the run. The worst one came about halfway through the race. So I was in agonizing pain for a mere 15miles. After the race was done the entire upper half of my legs were sore for a week but my toe felt like it was broken and the pain lingered for 3 weeks. AS it turns out the toe was not broken but my toenail was smashed and that toenail tormented me for about 3 weeks, as soon as the toenial fell off the pain dissipated. THe moral of the story:run a 50k in combat boots.

I was playing kickball and I slid into second base and broke my ankle/foot in a few places. I had a cast up to the top of my thigh for 6 weeks, and a short cast for 4. Good luck with your physical therapy.

    Sports injuries?

I broke my foot 18 months ago whilst ascending a staircase.

It's not exactly sport but I was going up. Which requires more effort than coming down.

After a great morning of skiing powder - goofing around on the get back track to the restaurant for some soup - I locked my ski with a buddy and fell and twisted while going really slow - no release from my skis occurred.  I badly ripped my left knee, quad tendon, patella tendon, ripped hamstring - generally did my knee in and it took years to heal.  My doctor wanted an MRI and she thought it was an acl pop.  I did not believe it - I healed it myself and learned a lot (also went through a knee obsession for some time).  Five years later, and  I can now ski bumps even better.  I believe injury comes to us for a reason and great lessons are learned that can transform our lives.  Nice question.

Sounds good that you're recovering from it, I certainly won't be stepping back onto the pitch for this season at least, and as much as I want to try skiing in future I'll still have that air of caution about it - even though i probably won't be going skiing for a couple of years smile

Nothing serious for me (cracked wrist playing lacrosse aged 13 or 14, that's it).

My other half has tried hard. He smashed his right elbow doing cross-country mountain bike racing aged about 15, broke his arm at judo a year or so late, and fell down an Alp aged 25, cracked his shoulder blade, and it grew back an extra bone spur which caught the tendons. That hurt.

One of my sisters got stood on by a horse wearing cross-country metal spikes, and the spike went all the way through her foot. That was pretty horrible, the infection was nasty too.

OW! the spur sounds extremely painful indeed, I do hope it's better nowadays

fractured wrist and bonegraft from coming off a horse at a flat out gallop, while another horse was trying to mount the horse I was on while galloping.

Wow. My only injury has been a broken finger due to it getting stuck in my horse's halter when she startled and jerked her head. Your horse injury is MUCH more exciting. Do you still ride?

As a runner and soccer player I've got all sorts of goofy joint problems. The most annoying one is probably an unexplained pain in my hips that could lead to fracturing because I refuse to not long jump and hurdle. Oh well, I guess I'll get them replaced by the time I'm thirty. lol. Oh! And I thought it would be a good idea to take up snowboarding this winter as well.

Mine isn;t a band njury but I thinke veryone will find is funny.

I used to play basketball like 7 hours a day in the summer when I was in my high school days.  Anmyway, I was playing in the sun one day and got horribly sun burned.

The next day I went back out to play some more ball and after a few hours I noticed my skin becoming blistered.  Apparently I was sweating and the sweat was getting trapped under the layer of burnt skin so I started looking like Freddy Kreuger.

I look at my arms, legs and chest and lost my mind.  I thught something was horribly wrong, ran off the basketball court, jumoed in my car and drove to the ER.  The whole way to the Hospital I had visions of me having skin cancer, the doctors having to remove my skin and me laying on a table as a big mess of muscle and tendons.

I got to the hospital and they pretty much laughed at me.

I've broken every finger, every toe, a wrist, a few ribs, tendon damage to a knee and both shoulders, a few concussions, and one nasty eye injury when someone's thumb went where it shouldn't.

    All in good fun!
