Can a Hub have too many ads?

   I visited a few hubs earlier having signed out and hadn't realized that even more ad blocks were shown per hub to non Hubbers.  First opinion was that they looked incredibly spammy.
   
   Recently a friend of mine went ad crazy on a site of his that gets really good traffic, placing maximum adsense, affiliate widgets, kontera, plus anything else he could get on there, and the result was the opposite of what he'd hoped for, a major loss in earnings.  Essentially it all just looked so terrible and spammy that it scared off all his viewers.
   
   I know you can change the ad settings in Hubpages, but what are your thoughts, are more ads per hub a good thing?

   This is definitely the part you better let professionals to sort out. And professionals are hub stuff, whose interests in this case are perfectly aligned with yours.

   Without a doubt, I'm not questioning HP's abilities, and playing around with ad placement etc. is a great idea and has helped me to maximize my own ad revenue elsewhere. 
   
   I guess I was just wondering if there were people here who have set there hub ad settings to less than high, and what kind of results they have seen through doing so.  Sometimes less is more.

   My experience in this respect is little, but using transferred knowledge from other spheres I am inclined to agree that indeed less can be more in the area of ad-placing.

   It depends
   but generally less & targeted & optimized ( to Hot locations) ad  feast to reader is more better for more chances , to get it clicked.
   
   Ad rotation & experiments are a important part of ad optimization and yeildbuild does nicely for Hubpages.

      It's never wrong to question, leaving things in the hands of others without analyzing the situation and following blindly is never a good idea in my opinion. 
      
      As I said above this was not questioning HubPages right to place more ads on each hub, just presenting my initial impression of seeing hubs with so many ads above the fold.  Hubpages does give you the option I believe of lowering the amount of ads displayed in the edit options, and just wondered if anybody had set this to lower and with what results.

   If you layout the design a little bit, and write a longer first and second capsule, the banner is lower on the page, which spreads that one down further.
   
   You can also write a shorter first capsule, and a longer second one to move the right box further down. You can maneuver the Adsense a little, you just have to play with the length of your text capsules.

      Good ideas thanks, I will try to lower the right box further down, otherwise all I see when first visiting the hub is a title surrounded by 11 ads, just looked a little too excessive for my liking, much better to spread them out around the hub a little.

      I started doing something like this when I went to one of my pages and couldn't find the beginning of the article. It really is important people can reassure themselves they have found the page they want within a few seconds of landing- if they can't even find a beginning they will disappear immediately.

         Yea. Just play around a little bit with your text capsule lengths and it will move things around... You just have to write in order to play around and alter. ;-) But, I assume you have an alternate s/n that you publish on.
         
         
         
         I just play around per hub to figure out how I want the Adsense. It depends on what all I have to add to the hub besides text (pictures, amazon capsules, ebay, etc.) as to where I prefer that top right box to be. I usually just have it at the top but then push the other banner down a little bit.

            I do indeed, there's so much conflict on HP at the moment that my sock puppet is the only way to keep my Adsense account safe, lol.

   Some of my hubs pick up the flashing neon sign type ads. The worst one is a hub that I did on teen sleep deprivation. I seriously hope no stressed out kid with epilepsy ever visits.
   
   I honestly worry that any kind of ad overkill will just encourage more people to use ad blocking in their browsers- forty million Americans have already downloaded the ad blocker for firefox.
   
   On the other hand I need income and any boost would be welcome. We'll just have to hope the pro's know what they are doing.

      Yeah it can be annoying when ads that you would rather not display are served up, you can control it to some extent using the competitive ad filter in Adsense, but only for your 60% of displays on Hubpages.
      
      As for people blocking ads altogether, just got to hope not too many people start doing this, personally I find the ads quite useful at times, and I'm fairly sure the internet would soon dry up of fresh unique content if there was no money to be made from it.

   I'm no expert in this field, but as a web surfer and consumer I find web pages look 'spammy' when the percentage of ads is high in relation to the actual information, especially if the info itself is low quality or questionable. The solution - write high quality, informative and substantial hubs. This will help 'balance' the number of ads and people are more likly to see the ads as credible if the content is credible (wrongly, I guess, as the content producers rarely have control over which ads google places on their page).

      Yep, like I said right at the start of this thread a friend of mine who has a large traffic website that has always made him a decent income went ad crazy with it thinking he'd double his income, it didn't go that way at all.  And that site has lots of good quality content and lots of traffic, but sometimes even that won't save you if you get too ad spammy.
