I am looking to start my own home based business. I need something that has a low start up cost but that with hard work can result in a decent salary. Any ideas?
Whatever it is, make it something that you enjoy. Otherwise, you will fail.
Strange, this topic has no takers. If you could take hubpages and writing as seriously as a business, I think you have one on hand. It is home based and gives you flexible timings plus you have the option to make a residual income if you work seriously at it.
My business is computer tech support and selling business mail servers. I can do almost all of it from home, but I do have to go out at least once or twice a month.
I work from home doing various things. I do run a business with a Multi Level Marketing company along with my writing and pictures. It does take a lot of work and is rough in the beginning for MLM.
You need to decide what your passion is and do something based around it. I write through blogs and also articles, I enjoy sharing things in writing. This makes it easy for me to do as I love to write for people. My MLM business is in the health field and I enjoy it for the product before the possible business rewards, that has helped as I didn't get discouraged in the beginning when the going was rough. There are many opportunities that are legit, and many ideas to start on your own. What do you enjoy?
Well, I enjoy a lot of things but I would say mostly baking, crafts and animals. I am thinking about something in the craft area because it would probably have the lowest start up cost. Just afraid there might too many crafty people out there.
With respect to animals, perhaps a pet-sitting service?
I end up having to leave my cats alone when I go away because I cannot find anyone to look after them. Luckily my cats use a cat flap to go out. This means I can leave stacks of dry food and big containers of water for them and know they will be OK. However, even then, I don't feel I can be away more than a week at a time.
If there was a local person doing pet-sitting, I would gladly pay them to come in once a day to check everything was OK, put out some tinned food, etc.
Etsy is a good site to sell crafts. It helps a lot if your craft is special or different from what others are offering.
I work from home as a translator and also prepare back of book indexes now and then. I did need to train for the book indexing side. I know people who make a full-time living from indexing, but I've never bothered to market myself for that since translation is more lucrative and more interesting for me personally. With regard to translation, I simply set up a profile on a translators' web site and get all my clients from there. I do however have specialist subject knowledge and a couple of more obscure languages, which means there is high demand for my services.
Before, while I was still in employment, I did try selling things on eBay, thinking that might expand into a full-time business. At that time, selling things I found in charity shops gave me far better returns than buying in new stuff for resale. However, I think eBay has changed dramatically since then and I'm not sure it is such a useful place now for very small-scale sellers.
moving boxes. there's probably a hub on this this site somewhere about that subject. someone must have written about how to sell moving boxes somewhere on hubpages.
