I am on an active Job Search and found something I thought was a fantastic new idea or is it?
Pay Cards - You no longer have to go cash a check - you get a Debit Card that the Company loads it each time you get paid.  What do you think of this pay process?  Does it sound futuristic and a great way of doing business?

I find it really scary. To set up such a plan you would need a bank account of some sorts and the company would need access to it. If the company has access to deposit, what makes you think that they cannot reach in and help themselves to your money.

Not true - take for example Redgage - they pay you with a prepaid Visa Card and every time you reach the payout threshold they transfer more to the card - no personal information other than name and address required.

SimeyC - Redgage - I will have to a search - I am sorry I have not heard of them.  Excellent - sounds fair.

A lot of people are doing it. Colleges with excess tuition goes on cards to the students, even States are paying UEI on cards. You spend it just like a prepaid Visa or you can deposit it just like cash. The issuing company has no access to your bank account.

I'm wondering how you can transfer $ on a debit card into your bank account? I wouldn't want to be paid by card. For instance, how would you pay your rent or mortgage? Maybe there is a way, and I'm too old school to know about it?

Um, three quarters of Americans are already being paid by direct deposit. I haven't been paid by check in years.

Eric - Yes - they start you out with a paper check and you have to wait a couple of weeks or more before you can be direct deposited.  I was surprised that many still want a paper check and they get irate if they try to change it.

Dave - If a company did that illegality - it wouldn't last very long.  When paying their employees is as important as making sure they have a credit standing with an account whether in a bank or credit union - a card for direct deposit is a pat on the back for that employee.  A trust is formed - it seems to me.

I believe Walmart has these - I also think you are able to go to 'customer service' in Walmart and get cash if required!

This will sound funny. I remember driving along I-5 in California and stopped to get gas. No one there. But, the gas thingy would take a oil company credit card. That was the early 70's I guess truckers used them long before we did with car refueling. Good thing I was a loyal employee consumer, then smile

I wonder if there won't be a compromise. Say no bills larger than a $20 soon. Where I work we give away American Express Debit cards as prizes at our company functions now. No more TV sets or radios. Or, home depot cards etc.

Look at Christmas now. I got a Starbucks card from my 5-yr old nephew and a In-out burger card from my niece. And they bought them with their gift allowance. I wonder if that is a card too smile

This sounds scary and a good way to overspend if you weren't careful.
Then they can access your account not sure. Interest thread though Deb thanks.

Gloshei - Yes - maybe to your reply.  My Job Search turned up okay - I finally snagged a position but not with a restaurant.  I don't know - when I read about the Pay Card idea - it lit a light bulb and to me it is an excellent venture for being paid.

Hi Deb. What would happen to tips?

I heard WalMart and Boston Market have PayCards - they pay regular wages and don't accept Tips.  If a Tip was given - it would more than likely be separate.  I don't know about restaurants who have a wait staff and are paid extremely low wages and that staff depends upon their Tips - the employer probably wouldn't use PayCards. Good question.

I work for a paycard company. The paycard is great for employees who do not have a bank account but want direct deposit. It is setup exactly like direct deposit so the employer has no access to your money or info just like they dont if you have a bank account. I would recommend asking your employer to get a paycard rather than buying one off of a shelf. The ones store sell are usually riddled with fees, including fees to get your pay loaded onto it and even monthly fees. Most paycards are free to employers and have minimal fees for you.
Check out my companies website for more info www.readyfunds.net
We dont offer paycards directly to employees(it has to go through an employer), but it will help you see what its all about.

Johnsshaby,  Thank you for your comment.  I looked into readyfunds.net and yes - it is a great benefit - I didn't know Master Card went into this area.
I would welcome a PayCard - my new employer does paper checks - eventually direct deposit.
