According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi’i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what Amr bin al-As could not.”

I'd much rather see them restored than destroyed.

I doubt it will happen. Too many tourist dollars would be lost...

Do Muslim clerics care about tourist dollars?

No, but the government does. Just because a religious person demands something does not mean it is something that should come to pass.

          From the article:

The only question left is whether Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood president is “pious” enough"

Will the new president succumb to religious pressure?

Much like if Mitt Romney is elected and if he will succumb to religious pressure to pass certain laws and negate others?

People in the Islamic world would kill to deal with the West's so-called religious problems.  You minimize the barbarity of the what women, gays and non-muslims have to live on a daily basis by implying that it's all the same.  It also reveals your self-absorption that you have to tie in a horrific Middle Eastern problem with the piddly problems we have with religion here.

It's like when you know people who you can't share your problems with because they're too interested in talking about themselves.

Obviously you missed the entire point of this thread... It is about some clerics wanting to get rid of the pyramids that brings millions, possibly billions of dollars to their country. I am not debating whether Islam is worse...

I am just saying that the government might not bow to what this one cleric wants much as a president of a democracy should not bow to what the religious of their country want.

No, Uninvited Writer, I didn't miss the point of this thread.  Your comment that it's the same, as if "Mitt Romney is elected and if he will succumb to religious pressure to pass certain laws and negate others?" isn't the same as a theocracy like Iran or possibly Egypt.  We have a Constitution, Bill of Rights, the whole bit.  They have the Koran.  Even when I was a liberal I never thought the problems we had over hear were the same as the problems of Islamic countries.  There is no comparison.

Typical monotheistic intolerance. Trying to destroy what might help us evolve.

You paint with a broad brush.  In modern times the problem is Islam.  By pretending it's all "monotheistic" religions you don't allow for the problem to be solved.

That has to be one of the most retarded things I've ever heard, talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
    yikes
But somehow they will still blame the West, as they drive their economy in to the ditch.

And we will continue to subsidize them.  Our tax dollars will bankroll Sharia Law.  The U.S. could stop it if we really wanted to.  I discussed this topic previously on my blog.

Religion is a god-send for the ruling classes. It more than anything perhaps, keeps the people divided - divide and rule.

Yeah, I agree with those guys. Too many of those things around. Get rid of the clutter, you will benefit in the long run. If it holds any sentimental value for you or your nation, then take a picture and get rid of the physical object. tongue

"The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two 6th century[1] monumental statues of standing buddhas carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley in the Hazarajat region of central Afghanistan." They were blown up by the Taliban and the world was outraged.

I say leave the pyramids alone! They are part of history and there is so much more to be discovered.
