Children and Hunger

   In 2007, 691,000 children went hungry in America and one in eight Americans struggled to feed themselves adequately.
   
   According to The Department of Agriculture in 2007 the number of children who suffered from hunger was more than double the 430,000 in 2006. This was the largest reported number since 1998 when 716,000 children went hungry.
   
   Yet, our television is bombarded with pleas to feed other countries.
   What's wrong with this picture?

   It's terrible when I was on the road, it was a common sight to see people standing on street corners holding signs saying, "WIll work for food"

         That is not what our Gov. is telling us according to them we are on the road to recovery! Hah what a joke.

   This is not a recession based problem. Long-haul truckers see this not just in the big cities but all over the country.
   
   Many of them at truck-stops and rest area's.
   
   Children crying.
   
   People see it on TV but it isn't the same. There are programs but unfortunatly they can't reach everyone. The Salvation Army, The American Red Cross.
   
   In todays economy, admittedly, its bad.

   The laws should revert for sharecropping and allow people to grow food wherever they can. (screw money)

    What I meant ohma is this problem has existed through good and hard economic times.
    
    During Hurricane Katrina, the world grieved with the Gulf Coast People losing their homes, but the truth is many never had homes to start with!
    
    Families lived on the beaches, under the boardwalks because it was warm there.
    
    It wasn't because they used drugs or were lazy. Some did, but many just couldn't find work.
    
    The Hurricane simply brought it to the worlds attention.

    They project that the number of hungry people will continue to increase each year. Yet I haven't heard of anyone trying to find a solution.

    Okay I am on a breather, Kid in florida changed law to allow buffets to donate leftover buffet inventory to shelters (Why not everywhere?)

       I agree. I often gave perfectly good food to those in need when I worked for the store. It was a violation of company policy and I could have been fired for it but if it was still in code and going in the trash why not let someone benifit from it.
       
       P.S. I also have 4 homeless families that I feed 3 meals a day to right out of my own Kitchen. I am not in a position to offer them shelter but I see that they have food and warm clothing. It is very little but I do what I can do.

    Like Brian said, how about opening some of the hundreds of thousands of acres of government land listed under wildlife conservation to sharecroping or hunting for food, not sport.
    
    How about using some of the money being invested in over seas drilling and war for undersea food source development?

       Sometimes I think the government views some people as undesirables and want them to just go away.
