Where was ADHD in the 80s when I was at school?
I honestly believe that ADHD is lack of discipline. It was not about in the 80s when I was at school. Its the governments fault and pharmacy's are making millions off drugs they feed the poor kids.
Its also a comfort zone to be mollycoddled. We had the cane at school and when I was 12 it was abolished! After that I went crazy and would lash out because all I got was a suspension. But when the cane was there I did as I was told. Say's a lot
There are several factors to consider. ADHD is a lack of discipline as well as an overuse of punishment. ADHD also was not as prevalent until they started over vaccinating infants and toddlers. Especially with MMR and DTaP.
This is an interesting question, as ADHD was the classic example used by sociologists to illustrate the concept of medicalization - turning the non-medical into a medical issue.
Quite coincidentally, I wrote a hub about the medicalization of illness, which you might be interested in.
I'm an adult who was in elementary school in the '80s. ADHD was there in the '80s just not as known as it is now. I had the toughest time in school all through the end of high school. By the end of my high school years ADHD was just starting to be known as a "hyper little boy" thing. I was not that type. My sister and I had the same discipline. I have ADD and she does not.
I can feel your pain. When I was a child ADHD was not as diagnosed as it is now either. However, from my own experience I can tell you that it is real. The first time I took my medicine I understood. Until that point, I did not understand the statement, "Think before you speak". I just couldn't do it. I would say things without them ever crossing my mind. After taking medication, then I could think before I said things. My natural filter was now there.

Do you believe in good old fashioned discipline for children ?I have been working with 3 yr old children lately & it is obvious there is a lack of discipline in the homes so I hate to think of what these kids will be like as teenagers . We were smacked when naught & so were our kids...

Have you ever been "paddled" in school? By paddled, I mean spanked by a teacher?I was paddled by the Dean Of Boys when I was in the 7th grade. He hit me twice with his board and I walked the straight and narrow afterwards. I knew for a fact I didn't want anymore of that. So,...
