I recently had to take my son who's five years old to have his heart checked.Having had a mild illness he started to frequently get blue lips and having listened to his heart through the stethoscope realised that his heart rate was inconsistant and would dip to only 50 B.P.M. for approx. 15 seconds each minute count. With a history of heart disorder in the family we were referred to a specialist.
The ultrasound gave us reassurance in its' findings that there were no mechanical physiological problems i.e.hole in the heart or blockages.
The consultant also prior to ultrasound had carried out a E.C.G.
and explained that sometimes in young children they can have a temporary inconsistant heart rate following illness and often just grow out of it.

I have many years experience in imaging new borns to adults.  The vast majority of children with heart 'murmurs' end up with an unremarkable ultrasound of the heart.  Make sure if any follow up is done on  him that a pediatric cardiologist is consulted, not an adult cardiologist.

I enjoyed your story, and feel free to ask or comment at any time.

I have had several pelvic ultrasounds for endometriosis, and ovarian cysts diagnosis. I have also had echocardiography done on my heart twice when I had an episode of atrial fibrillation which produced a high pulse rate to 150. I was told that I could have Angina and started on Beta blockers and aspirin. I also had imaging done on the arteries of my cervical spine after suffering a TIA prior to going to theatre to have cervical laminectomy for severe degenerative disc disease. This confirmed what the Neurosurgeon had thought that there was pressure on the arteries at the back of my neck, which had caused the TIA. He said if I had gone to theatre as planned, I could have had a massive stroke. The surgery was cancelled for the time being because of the risk of stroke.  BB
