Who Else Wants to Know How Vitamins Help ADHD?

Updated on December 3, 2012

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD is a common condition which affects children and teens that is similar to ADD, which more commonly affects adults.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has estimated that at least 3 to 5 percent of children have ADHD, while other experts have said that the condition occurs in 8 to 10 percent of school aged children.

Due to the unpleasant and dangerous side effects of medication, many people have searched for alternative remedies.

There are now a wide array of non-medication choices that promote healing and health related to ADHD, many of which are used instead of the standard medical approach. Sometimes, however, vitamin preparations are used in concert with medical therapy. The following vitamins and supplements help with attention deficit disorder:

Vitamins B3 and B5

Children and adults alike diagnosed with ADHD usually require an extra amount of B3 and B5 vitamins. Vitamin B3 affects nervous system function and has been known to help with a number of maladies, from schizophrenia to other mental illnesses. In addition, these vitamins work as stresss fighters for ADHD, since people afflicted usually have such low tolerance levels for stress. These vitamins can also reduce other ADHD symptoms such as mood instability, fatigue and concentration difficulties.

Vitamins B6 and B12

ADHD: Vitamin B6 is an important supplement for the best brain function and also isaid to help maintain normal magnesium levels, which are usually deficient in people with ADHD.

As with all of the other B vitamins, B12 vitamin has an integral role in the nervous system and the regulation of moods, fatigue, anxiety and memory problems.

ADHD & B12: Sufficient amounts of vitamin B12 are needed also to assure that the SAMe (synthesis of S-adenosyl-methionine) - an amino acid known to promote concentration, alertness and well-being.

Vitamins C, D and E

The powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C is recognized as an effective immune booster and also a known factor in synthesizing imbalances of the norepinephrine neurotransmitter, which are linked to ADHD.

People with ADHD typically have low levels of ferritin and essential fatty acids, both of which are more efficiently absorbed with vitamin C. Vitamin E improves brain circulation and protects brain tissue from toxic free radicals.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for brain growth, function and development. Deficiencies of this vitamin are associated with mood swings, depression, psychological issues and mood swings.

Therefore, since those are all symptoms associated with ADHD, Vitamin D is an essential part of the nutritive plan for ADHD sufferers.

Fish Oil

There has been a great deal of evidence that fish oil can help alleviate ADHD symptoms. The omega-3 fatty acid properties are said to improve mental skills and the ability to organize and focus mentally.

In one particular study, results showed an improvement as to inattentiveness and hyperactivity, and an improvement in overall behavior in 7 to 12 year old children with ADHD.

Magnesium

The mineral, magnesium is known to have a calming effect. Many people do not get adequate amounts of magnesium as they should, which can result in deficiencies contributing to a variety of bodily malfunctions.

Low magnesium levels may lead to anxiety, irritability and restlessness. This mineral may also play a significant role in levels of sugar metabolism, an important aspect of mood and concentration stabilization.

Zinc

Studies have suggested that children with ADHD could have much lower zinc levels than what are recommended in their body.

Scientists have also reported much-improved symptoms for children with ADHD disorder, when, as part of a comprehensive treatment program, they took zinc supplements.

There have been several research studies that have demonstrated significant reductions in impulsive and hyperactive behavior when zinc was supplemented in people’s diets. In a Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology study from 2005, there was a correlation shown between the zinc levels of children and inattention, by both parents and teachers.
