100 Baby Names from A-Z
76It's quite a decision, choosing a name for your baby. Many people have a lot of trouble deciding. The meaning of a name is often given a lot of consideration in making a choice, as well.
I've always had an interest in baby names and their meanings. Below is a comphrensive list of 100 favorite names, 50 for boys and 50 for girls. I haven't included meanings. Maybe I will research that for a future hub. There are however many websites out there that will provide names with their meanings especially if you are looking for a unique name. www.babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com is one such website. You can even look up the meaning of your own name if you never knew it. You can rate names that you like or don't like as well. They boast 27,000 names on the site!
Sometimes, meaning does not matter much to the parents, they are just drawn to a name because it sounds beautiful. Some parents also feel a need to see their born baby's face, look at his or her features and look into his or her eyes before making a final decision about the name.
It's quite an interesting thing really. I've had friends who chose names for their babies and I wonder what fueled that final decision. I've also know families where every member including the parents have a name that starts with the same letter. There is a now famous American family with eighteen children and every family member's name begins with the letter J. Well, they are very lucky to have chosen the letter J, because there are plenty of names available beginning with that letter!
Additionally, we've all seen the kind of names that celebrities have chosen for their babies. With the celebrity baby boom of the past couple of years, we have seen new attention given to names like Sunday, Apple, Maddox and Bronx. www.babynames.com has its own take on the best and worst celebrity baby names of 2008.
www.babynamesworld.parentsconnet.com or www.babynames.com, free databases and the baby name books listed by amazon and ebay are good for really in-depth research for finding that right name. For expectant parents, I hope you enjoy the list that I've created below.:

Hey there LondonGirl, thanks for your comment. That's cool- so many of your family members' names being on the list. Nivea does remind me of the face cream but it's becoming a more and more common name for baby girls. And yes, I do know more individuals with the last name Walker than with the first name Walker.
Olivia, Isabella and Gabrielle are all favorites of mine. What I learned on www.babynames.com is that Olivia and Isabella seem to be favorite names according to MANY opinions.
One of my sisters is called Olivia, which wasn't quite a popular in 1983 as it is now! She's always called "Lily", though.
Yeah, I used to think my taste was 'original' when I liked that name (Olivia).
Lily is a really nice nickname for Olivia. I don't think most people think of that. They probably use just Liv.
Lily herself gets the credit for that - it's what she called herself when she was learning to talk.
That's so funny. I thought maybe the adults in the family gave her that nickname when she was born. But she gave it to herself, awesome.
All her own idea. Everyone has called her it since she learned to talk, apart from my Granny (who doesn't believe in short names and always used "Elizabeth" for her own daughter, not "Lizzie") and the bank manager!
That's another really interesting thing you bring up. I know a lot of people who don't want to mess with a given name and are opposed to using nicknames.
Thanks for doing this! It will assist me in developing further images for one of my Zazzle galleries: http://www.zazzle.com/names_by_willow
Sure Michelle. Thanks for your comment.-Journey*
Hi Journey, Although my baby naming days are over, I had fun reading this hub to see what the popular names are this year. Whew! My daughter's name is still unique. :-) I really loved the names Isabella, but my family talked me out of it. Essence is kind of cool sounding. I have always loved unique names. Thanks for sharing.
Good mixture of names. The trouble with some names is they sound fine for kids but ridiculous for adults
That is so true, Ethel. When naming the baby, I guess one should give thought to when the baby grows up:-) Thanks for stopping by and commenting. See you soon.
My favorite girl name is Autumn, you should put that up there.
Hi Glare, Autumn is a great name, Thanks for suggesting!

Interesting hub! I like many of your names, and you've included my son, other half, mother and one of my sisters in your lists.
There are some I'm really not so keen on, though. "Desiree" just screams "call girl" to me, as does "Essence". "Gretchen" is too harsh for my ear, and "Jaclyn", "Neve" and "Isabeau" just look wrongly spelt. And "Nivea" is face cream.
"Quincy" is a cross between a fruit and an illness, and "Taylor" and "Walker" are surnames.
