After reading stories and watching the news for the past 6 months I believe it is now time for me to share my feelings on adopting an animal and puppy mills. In July 2007 we wanted to adopt another Cocker Spaniel as having two was better then one and of course my older Cocker needed a playmate. IWe searched the News papers and went on-line just like many of us do and finally found an add that read " 6 week old Cocker Spaniel Puppies for Sale, $300.00". Not a bad price for a Cocker especially with papers so we contacted the lady and recieved directions which took me 70 miles from where we lived. As we approached the home we were taken aback by the way the outside of the home looked, my heart told me that this was out of norm as she claimed she only had a set of puppies. We heard so many barking animals we didn't know what to do.We couldn't turn back now as that drive was endless and we really wanted another puppy , wasn't that the objective? The woman answered her door and unbeknownst there were cages everywhere ,females feeding new puppies , there were at least 30 puppies in a little plastic pool that were being fed and there were additional puppies outside that nobody would adopt for health reasons, we wanted to save them all. Not wanting to be rude we politely asked her if she had any female cockers and she said most of them were males. We approached the little plastic pool and there was this little round puppy who kept trying to get out, she told me they were to young so I asked her if she was female as that little face kept looking up at me begging me with its little eyes. The woman squeezed her as she picked her up and she whimpered, I knew she was supposed to come home with me. We paid the woman and then wrapped her in a warm towel and left. We rescued our dog from a puppy mill and we now call her "Daisy". The ending of this story is although we rescued a puppy , she came from a puppy mill and her mother was on her 8th litter. It saddened me to see how inhumane some can be and that they would do anything for a quick buck. I reported the woman and the address to the humane society and they rescued over 165 dogs and puppies within in a few days.
Animal shelters euthanize appr.3-4 millions cats and dogs a year however our pet stores continue to sell kittens and puppies. Many of them come from puppy mills and they do not concern themselves with the health and conditions of the parents. If you are going to adopt a pet consider adopting them from your local animal shelter. If you choose to adopt them from a Private party ask them how many litters the mother has had?Request references of prior owners and see if you can contact them regarding the conditions, health,etc. of the puppy they chose to purchase. These are all the things I did not do and have learned from my own experience. Although "Daisy" is a happy and healthy dog now, she did cost over $2000.00 in a year due to her health issues which we now have under control and we have had to work on her behavior as she is very high strung opposed to the Cocker Spaniel that we bought the previous year from a Private Owner.

If you believe you have purchased or know of someone who works,or owns a puppy mill please do the right thing and report them as we have to stop the abuse of these animals. Contact www.humanesociety@hsus.org or if you need information on list of adoptable pets or shelter and rescues you may go to www.pets911.com they also have information on pet friendly rentals,lost and found etc. www.petfinder.com posts classifieds and you will also be able to obtain a local vet in your area. These are all good resources if you are already a pet owner or if you are considering purchasing a dog or cat. As "Daisy " turns a year old next month she has brought me great joy and companionship however everytime we look at her we think about her mother and all of the other little ones. Her mother not being able to live like a normal dog all she was to them a breeder. No affection , no life just a puppy maker and an early death. Do your homework before your purchase a pet and share your story if you have one, hopefully one day we can stop the cruel and inhumane way animals are treated and bred.

I don't understand either as I was so sickened and surprised I had to get my little girl out of there. I hope that her mom ended up with a good home as she looked so pitiful and she was so friendly. Never again as humans should not be so greedy ,animanls are so loving :) You are so welcome and I am glad people are reading it.
Daisy in one lucky Cocker and Daisy's outcome is the only good part of this hub. The rest of this story is horrific. How can this be? It has to be stopped. I have two dogs. One English Pointer and one Chihuahua, a strange mix you may say but they get one famously. I did check their papers and visited the kennels where they were born (The pointer, Tobias, required a 7 hour drive to the kennel) I also said hello to the parents of each dog and made sure those parents had been treated well. I made all of this a condition of sale when I went to the pet shop. In fact I said I would only buy if I could pick the pups up myself. I told them, "just let me know when a little is born and I will travel to them for the pick up" at first they put up all sorts of practical reasons why this was not possible. But in the end I got what I wanted and am very happy I know the background of my dogs. Sure it cots a few dolars and a bit of time but these two dogs are a very important part of our family and we felt that to start our right was the least we could do for them.

That is how I feel about my pets , I would climb mountains for them and it was horrific it honestly brought me to tears , although Daisy was so young I knew that I had to presuade that woman and I did !!! It disgusts me to think what people do for an almighty buck.
You on the other hand went the extra mile to make certain that you knew who the breeders were and there conditions , I commend you on that . More people should do the same and maybe we could shut the puppy mills completely down.
ya puppy mills make me sick. Way too many people want to make a buck on breading dogs. It makes me sad.

Hi there i just watched a Oprah show on puppy mills!! im from South Arfica so our shows come out long after they are made. Im discusted that a human can be like that, dont they have feelings at all. i was in tears and i feel like i am not doing enough. Im just turning 18 now but still. I love animals and we recently adopted our oldest member of the family Eddie he is 18 years old and is blind and deff, he doesn't know his own name but he is perfect.. he is from an animal shelter and is now very happy. I just wish there is more i could do about this horrible thing that is going on.

I got a dog from the pound over 20 years ago. He died a couple of years back. He was a mutt. I dreamt about him last night. I still miss him.

Not for a while. I live alone and a puppy needs a family all the time, especially early. Maybe again some day, when I can give him the care he deserves.

I don't know you, but I LOVE YOU, you have such a wonderful heart of gold lady! Your story came up on my Rottie page. While it wasn't a Puppy mill per se, they seemed to be taking ok care of the pets (not as I would, but good enough I knew they were ok, and only one mama dog, and they offered me to see the stud, I declined, I just wanted my doggie!) Anyway, strange as it may seem, I told them I wanted the puppy to PICK ME! I climbed in the cage, and when the guy opened the door ALL the pups came running out and started playing. I still sat on the ground. My rott came up to me and my friend, and she picked ME. I scooped her up and she fell into a quick snooze of comfort in my arms! I tossed him his money, and he insisted on receipt.. I din't care, I just wanted her!

I have a never ending hatred for those, and those who also raise Pits for fighting, and puppy mills. Many people wanted me to let them breed my girl, and nope, I had her fixed, and best to my heart, I never even went back to get her AKC papers.. she was just my love, bottom line! No new pups for her, but she's had better health care than myself at times! TY so much for your hub, and your rescue.
P.S. Oh, I was told because they let me take her at 5 weeks, that was a rescue, and I feel that could be right, as the pups were in a good cage with water, shelter etc. but still too young to be given out. Even though I only paid $300. for her, on the way home, stopped at the pet store and bam! Another $500. cos I got HER EVERYTHING she needed to be in a loving home! And yes, if you read my hub, I really did sit out in rain/cold all through the nights to potty train her! And I don't regret a second of it, she's a JOY of my life besides my son! (who rescued a Lab):) Bless your heart lady!!!!!
Katharella: Thank you for sharing your story and as you and I both know it is heartbreaking! Isn't funny how we will do all for our babies? I certainly will read your hub puppies are so much work but they bring you so much joy. Can you believe this woman also had her home up for sale on top of all the dogs and puppies? I will never understand how a human being could run a puppy mill. I don't have pets right now, but my last dog was adopted fromt he humane society and I have a cherished friend who has adopted her second greyhound.
