Alexandrite is the color changing gemstone belonging to the Chrysoberyl family. It is a rare and beautiful gemstone which has the unique characteristic of appearing green in the daylight and glowing red in artificial light. Chromium gives alexandrite its color and while, in most minerals, a trace element like chromium would provide only one color to the mineral, in alexandrite it gives it two! This stone was named in honor of Czar Alexander II and was discovered in 1831 in the Ural Mountains in Russia on his birthday. This stone has a hardness rating of 8.5 and used to mostly make beautiful jewelry. It is the gemstone for those born in the month of June and under the Zodiac Sign of Gemini and Scorpio. Alexandrite is also the wedding anniversary gemstone for the 45th and 55th year of marriage. This stone is believed to draws luck and good fortune and is often used in love spells and rituals. Alexandrites are found in many places including Russia, India, Brazil, Sri Lanka,Tanzania, Myanmar, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
