CELL PHONES AND DRIVING................WHY

IF YOU HAVE A HABIT OF SCANNING OVER, (WE ALL DO AT TIMES), CERTAIN HUBS BEFORE COMMENTING OR RATING, PLEASE DON'T DO IT WITH THIS ONE. THIS IS A MUST READ, PLEASE READ, THE HUB, (AND VIEW THE VIDEOS), IN IT'S ENTIRETY, IF NOT NOW BOOKMARK IT FOR LATER AND READ THEN. I FEEL SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS, THAT I URGE ALL TO READ IT.
Cell phone and driving
I wrote a tongue and cheek article a few months ago, entitled, Oh No.........I Left My Cell Phone At Home. It's not funny anymore, the statistics, pertaining to driving while using the cell phone, are frightening.
I got the idea to write this hub from something that I saw today. I was riding the subway, and as we rose above ground, I peered out my window and looked right at a female, (actually the gender didn't matter, just trying to be accurate), truck driver in an eighteen wheeler, (transfer truck, big rig, whatever you want to call it), pick up her cell phone, hold it out in front of her and proceeded to dial the number, then put the phone to her ear and began a conversation. Oh, did I mention that she was driving on the freeway at near rush hour. I was mortified, mind you I see this on a daily basis, but to think that 40 tons of steel riding down the highway at break neck speed, with the driver on the phone is terrifying to say the least.
I don't know if this is real or a reenactment
A few statistics
I won't bore you with a lot of statistics, because frankly they change frequently. I'll only cite a few that I found on the Internet, simply to make my point. First a University of South Carolina researcher had this to say, "planning to speak and speaking put far more demands on the brain's resources than listening." Another said that the risk of having an accident was four times more likely when talking on the cell phone. And it's been shown that texting is far more dangerous, as the video above shows. It has been stated that the accident that took the lives of 25 commuters on a California rapid transit line was caused by the train operator texting, while operating the train. There are many, many more, proven accidents caused by either talking, or texting on the cell phone, while driving.
You can ignore this part if you want, I just wanted to throw this in for good measure. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA) USA, says that compelling evidence proves that when it comes to cellular phone usage while driving, the estimates are, your chances of getting in an accident increases by 300%. In addition it's said that 25% of all traffic accidents are a result of distracted drivers. I might add here that a report says that hands free talking while driving didn't decrease the risk, it's the act of speaking and planning to speak that is distracting.
I also read that the part of the brain that controls vision becomes less active when people focus on something visually while having a conversation. I can testify to that being true, and you can too, just try this little experiment, the next time you're watching television. Make a phone call to someone that you want to talk to, and by all means have on a program that you want to watch, and see if both get equal attention. This is a little experiment that I made up, because it happens to me all the time. But it proves that it's harder to drive and focus on the road while talking on your cell phone.
My thoughts
Let's try to lighten it up a bit here. Whatever happened to driving down the road by yourself, with yourself alone, with your thoughts. I was just wondering, when we didn't have the luxury of the cell phone, what we did. I know, we spent time with ourselves, listening to radio, tapes, Cd's or our own horrible, or melodious voices. And, or, (watch out now), picking and flipping boogers. Oh, don't be so grossed out, you know you see that, (or do it yourself), all the time. As a matter of fact that's one of the things I also witnessed, (yuk), today, while on my train ride. As detestable as that is, I'd almost rather see that than a phone conversation, because the only thing that would come from that is a little nausea, on the part of the onlooker. Just a little aside, "you're not invisible while driving, we see you, so quit that." I digress. Let's go back to the music a minute. It has also been noted that tinkering with your music maker, (Cd, radio etc), whatever it is, is also to blame for numerous accidents. The message here is, "people, the car is not your playground, family room, or wherever you are comfortable doing these things." Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on the road while driving.
Before I take this any further, I want to raise my hand and say that I was guilty, but not anymore. Of course, it had to be mandated, before I completely quit. We have a "no cell phone while driving law," in California as do about fourteen other states, in the U.S.
Hold on now, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. There are benefits to having a cell phone along for the ride. Emergency calls can be made, as a matter of fact The Cellular Telephone and Internet Association estimated that about 139,000 emergency call are made from cell phones every day, and no doubt a good number are made from drivers. Also when experiencing mechanical problems, drivers are able to reach towing services easier. In addition, what mother doesn't welcome her cell phone if a child falls ill when they're apart.
Even with all the positives, I can't help but wonder what happened between the time the first auto makers put the first car on the road and Motorola, Samsung, or whoever put the first cell phones in our hands? I've been driving far longer than I've been talking on a cellular phone, and I'm still here to talk about it. I would venture to say, that, all those years cell phones didn't save my life on the road, although they might now. Sounds like a politician now don't I, speaking out of both sides of my mouth, but,(I'm just saying).
All I'm saying is, with all the proof that using the cell phone while driving is detrimental to our health and life, shouldn't we be about the business of adopting new habits for our travels along the road, again. Oh say I have a novel idea, why don't we spend a little time with ourselves, or, are we afraid of what we'll find, from a little introspection. (I'm just saying).
Just one more thing, please view the second video that I inserted, and see does it have an impact, if not it should. Make it a habit of not talking on a cell phone while driving, and don't let anyone with whom you're riding talk or text while driving. If there's ever a time to speak up this is it. I have no qualms about speaking out when I'm riding with someone that wants to talk on the phone while I'm riding with them. In my immediate circle of friends and family, both my daughters, and a 78 year old friend has gotten a ticket while talking and driving. That perhaps saved their lives, and the lives of someone they might have met intimately through an accident So speak up, and, help save a life or two.
If your driving and cell phone habits are bad will you change them now

Wow fatfreta! This hub was very powerful. I've been guilty of driving and talking on the phone before, but I've put a stop to that a long time ago - especially while my children are with me. Even if my friends or family call me, the first thing I ask is if they are driving while conversing with me. If so, I ask them to call me back. I don't want to be the last person they were talking to before they got into an potential car accident. If any of us still text, talk on the phone, or allows ourselves to be distracted while driving, then these powerful videos should put a stop to that (hopefully). Thank you for this vital information.
I so agree with you. What's wrong putting them on answering machine. Thank you for writing this great hub.
Thank you all for weighing in on this very important hub. I do hope that you paid attention to the last part of the hub, and viewed the videos, because they are so important for making my point. Hope to see you all soon.
A good reminder.
i once blogged about it, too, because of the many accidents happening in the Philippines caused by this.
Thanks ladydijay, haven't seen you for awhile, thanks for stopping.
bingskee, I'll have to go over and look at yours. Thanks for stopping.
Love it! I almost crashed my dad's new truck into a gal that wasn't paying attention the other day and she ran the stop sign. I get really nervous when I see people driving while talking on their phones. I have precious cargo most of the time when I am in my vehicle. I have talked on the phone in the past in the car but it's my rule now that I don't ever. If I just have to use the phone I pull into a gas station or other parking space. Mississippi doesn't have cell phone laws.
fastfreta--Day before yesterday coming home on my motor scooter, a truck drifted fully in my lane. He jerked it back about the time I hit my brakes. Cell phone was the culprit. I believe it happens more often than we realize. Great Hub!!!
Thanks Tammy for your validation of my hub. It's a shame that we have to drive around afraid all the time, because of the people that don't seem to value life. I say that because it has been conclusively proven that, talking on the phone and driving don't mix, and people continue to do it. Thanks again for stopping by, please come again soon.
Jim, you would think that truck drivers would be more cautious, because they are out on the road more often than most and can really see all the carnage associated with accidents caused by phone usage. Thanks Jim for weighing in. Please come again.
fastfreta, very timely hub in light of a recent band on hand held cellphone while driving in Ontario Canada. This law became effective on Monday october 26th and on that same day I saw 3 drivers in a row talking on their cellphone in the lane next to me on the highway. Granted they were using hands free devices, but I feel that as you rightly mentioned talking while driving increases the risk of an accident.
While cellphone is perhaps the main culprit, other devices such as GPS, dvd players, ipods & mp3 are just as bad. Not to mention the people who drive and do their make up, brush their teeth, pluck their eye brow, brush their hair, have a meal or adjust their baby in the back seat - these are all dangerous things to do while operating a car at over 100 km/hr or any speed for that matter.
Thanks for the reminder that we should take responsibility for our driving and think about the consequences of our misbehaviour on the roads.
fasfreta, I just love your writing style. It is like have a conversation with you. Keep up the fantastic work!
so true... I have often wondered what is so more important than arriving alive.
Thanks Bail Up, for your comment. Your comment arrived twice, I deleted one. Hope to see you again soon.
Thanks DynamicS, for stopping. I wish the law would apply to all 50 states, no to the whole world, because the second video above looks to be from somewhere in Europe, so it's a worldwide phenomenon, and bingkee even speaks of what's happening in the Philippines.
fastfreta I think this is the first hub of yours that I have read which has a sense of urgency and seriousness to it. It shows you must have very strong feelings about this. I applaud you for sending the message that cell phones are not compatible with driving.
I have come into contact with drivers who were performing poorly, and as I drove past them, in most cases, I noticed that they were being distracted by their cell phones. Thank you for this hub which was well written and very informative.
Yes create a page, I do have very strong feelings on the subject, after witnessing so much carnage left behind by these drivers, I don't think enough could be said, until it ends. That second video says a lot, and it adds, (I think), depth to the message. Thanks a lot for stopping.
A very important Hub. The Video's bring it home.
I was caught using my Mobile in the Car years ago (as I was stuck in traffic, not moving). Well, long story short. I got a fine of £30. Since then I've always pulled over or just used Hands free.
I hope people adhere to this Hub. Thanks. :)
Thanks Lady_E for validating my hub. I too hope that it makes just a little bit of difference.
I voted no cause I think I don't have such bad habits.
Great hub Fastfreta, great analysis, and conclusions I agree to wholeheartedly! Thank you for writing it. :)
Lady_E, it has been shown that "just" talking on a phone while driving, even hands free, is a great distraction, too. Be careful please :)
Thanks Misha for your observation, and for being a safe driver, we could use more like you on the road. Thank you also for stopping, please come again.
Well done, an articulate and easy read with important content fastfreta. You're setting a wonderful example for those 5 grandbabies! Keep it up and happy Halloween!
Thank you very much Carmen Borthwick, for your comment and compliment. Thanks for stopping by, please stop again.
My favorite part of your hub was whatever happened to the days before cell phones? We absolutely were able to drive and listen to the radio or CDs. I'm not a huge fan of this technology that "enables" us (as addicts) to communicate 24/7.
California has so many drivers -- so many really bad drivers already. With cell phones in their hands they're impaired. Seriously impaired.
Thanks for making the point so eloquently and the videos -- shocking. MM
Thanks MM, haven't heard from you in a while. You're so right about the drivers here. I can tell that you really read the whole hub. Thanks for that. Hey, funny new avatar. Hope to see you again soon.
This hub was much needed. I can't count the times I've passed drivers, on the freeway, TEXTING, I spoke to a co-worker about and she said she does it all the time. What is wrong with people? None of us do well at multi tasking..I don't care who you are were lousy at it. Thanks for the excellent read
Thank you very much Carmen Borthwick, for your comment and compliment. Thanks for stopping by, please stop again dis things r verryy dengerous we should more careful
Thanks pmccray, you're so right about the multi tasking, especially when driving. Thank you for stopping, please stop again.
Thank you abid ahmed for stopping.
This is so true . I have a 18 year old daughter who does that and plus textes and I'm alway getting on her about that. Maybe she should read this. It might change her mine about doing it.
Maybe if she sees the second video it might just help her see the light. Thanks so much for your comment, please come again soon.
True, true, true, FF! I fuss at my daughters all the time about this!
I fussed at my daughters all the time too, and both had to get tickets before they stopped. But thank goodness they stopped before they had an accident. So hopefully your daughter's only consequence will be a ticket. Thank you habee for weighing in on this.
Thanks for taking time to write this most profound hub! Cell phone usage while driving should be against the law, and is in some states already. However, like many other crimes of this sort, the fines are way too light.. the pocketbook is still the best way to get our attention.
Thanks G.L.A for your comment. How I wish that all states would outlaw the use of cell phone conversations while driving. As you implicated, stiffer fines, heavier consequences should be the order of the day. Let's hope it doesn't take more carnage for all to wake up. Thanks G.L.A for stopping, please stop again soon.
Love this one fastreta, Bill 118 here in Ontario has put a ban on cell phone use while driving. Period. It's about time.
I'm glad to hear that the laws are being changed everywhere, hope it catches on worldwide. Thanks for your comment.
Great hub on a topic of much concern to us all. Whenever you see an eratic driver they're usually on their phone. Thanks for this insightful hub, fastfreta.
Peg, you're right, that has been my experience also. Thanks for stopping, please come again.
Yes you hit a strong one here. Of course I fall into the gulity party, But have A teeage cousin who Drives a stick shift and likes to text at the same time drives me nutts.
WOW, Damion, you take your life in your hand every time you ride with you cousin. Being a teenager, I'm sure there is nothing you can tell him. However, maybe the one video in the hub will have an impact. Thanks for stopping by, please come again.
