Dead Kitten ... A Poem...
My very late contribution to Stan Fletcher's Killer Ideas for your next hub,
Unfortunately it is inspired by a spike that we have had here in Australia of animal cruelty often resulting in the death of many young animals ....
The dead eye opened
As the small body lay smoking
Life extinguished and ruined
It twitched, burnt and bleeding
Dragging its shaking body to the track
On paws raw and blistered
It made its way slowly back
Every step long and tortured
The moon high in the dark sky
As the miles between them dropped away
The glow of hate burning in its one eye
Its death so much more than play
Seeing his shadow in the window
The dead kitten yowled
It would need one sure blow
As closer and closer it prowled
Slinking inside paw prints bloody
It hunted its tormenter
Its mournful cry eerie
As it followed the sound of laughter
Sitting in the door frame
Its glowing eye staring
Blistered, beaten, bloody and lame
As his killer fell back shouting
Hissing the dead kitten attacked
Its broken body lashing out
The boy barely had time to react
Knocking it back with a shout
Blood from its claws, dripping
The dead kitten glared
As the boy started screaming
Finally at last he was scared
The claw mark started to smoke
As the young teenage boy stared to burn
His cries cut off as he started to choke
Some evil can’t be unlearned
As the fire started on the inside
The dead kitten started to heal
Falling to the floor the killer died
As his life force the cat did steal
Darting through the burning building
His limbs fresh and new
Free now he didn’t stop running
He knew what he had to do
Return to his litter at the witch’s cabin
He never should have run away
He had more than learned his lesson
It was best never to stray...
